We are looking for an enthusiastic student to work in the WSS Optical Alignment Automation R&D group. We are a team of engineers who develop the process to actively align, attach, and test the optical components in the wavelength selective switch. The WSS is a cutting edge technology that is central to Lumentum’s Agile Optical Network products.

This is an excellent opportunity to work in a multi-disciplinary environment and to learn about the process automation used at Lumentum. In this position, students will contribute to the advancement of the automated assembly processes used in the final stages of the optical assembly of the WSS and related products. Students will be mentored by senior engineers and together they will develop the processes, associated hardware and software to enable the targeted alignment improvements. Students will collaborate with the Optical Design, Manufacturing Engineering and Automation Software Development teams throughout their work terms, giving them a broad overview of the many disciplines involved in the design of our products.

  • Debug and field-test processes with end-users and other developers
  • Create, peer review, and release work instructions and other necessary documentation
  • Advance the alignment platform (hardware and processes) under the mentorship of the automation team and in close partnership with the software development teams

Recommended Education

  • 3rd or 4th year: Mechatronics Engineering or similar candidate from other Engineering and Science disciplines

Required Skills

  • Good problem solving skills
  • Team player who can also work autonomously
