YW Calgary works to provide preventative and restorative services to women and their families to help them thrive. Our mission is to intervene, empower and lead where people need us most. We are committed to advocating for mental health, supporting those experiencing domestic violence and enabling women’s economic prosperity.
Reporting to the Manager, Shelter Services & Affordable Housing, the supervisor oversees individual and team performance, provides guidance and support, identifies development needs, and works collaboratively with their team to support program and organizational needs in the pursuit of YW’s strategy, mission, and vision. The supervisor works closely with other program supervisors and their teams to ensure that women and children residing in YW’s emergency domestic violence shelter are provided with innovative childcare, preventive and restorative health and wellness programming that holistically supports their long-term health, well-being and allows them to thrive in a safe and equitable community.
This position is a 37.5 hour per week role with occasional evening and weekend work required.

What You’ll Do
  • Supports the principles of a learning organization and is responsive to diverse ways of learning and meets team members where they are at.
  • Actively seeks out opportunities to provide in-the-moment coaching and feedback to employees to ensure learning is an active process and maximize contextual knowledge building.
  • Works actively to connect team members to YW mission, vision and strategic plan and ensuring that team can clearly articulate these in their communications, both internally and externally.
  • Ensures each team member has workplan goals that are relevant and aligned with organizational strategy, mission, and vision and ensuring quarterly reviews of workplan goals are completed.
  • Uses well-honed conflict management skills to mediate individual and team conflicts with a focus on building success and ensuring a psychologically safe work environment.
  • Updates job descriptions in partnership with team members annually to ensure job competencies and accountabilities are current. Treats all team members with respect and actively promotes a culture of psychological safety where employees are supported to take risks, openly dialogue, and express themselves without fear of reprisal.
  • Team meetings are regularly scheduled to ensure information is shared efficiently, team goals are aligned and there is clarity on action plans.
  • Provides regular opportunities for staff recognition and social activities to enhance team communication, collaboration, and retention. Works with other shelter services supervisors in planning and development of portfolio team learning and team-building days.
  • Sets regular supervision and performance conversations and grounds performance evaluations with candor through honest communication, clear role expectations, feedback, performance successes and challenges and employee-led workplan goals.
  • Actively participates in organizational onboarding of new team members and develops comprehensive, onboarding process to engage and integrate new employees and ensure their success in effectively contributing to the team and YW.
  • Promotes a learning environment and shared leadership philosophy that values innovation, knowledge-transfer, collaboration and fosters the next generation of organizational leaders.
  • Actively collaborates with our People Services team and participates in relevant People Services activities, including recruiting with a lens to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Ensures values and practices that foster the development of skills and ensure systems are in place to operationalize those skills. Responsible for payroll approvals, managing and approving time-off requests and ensuring all employee documentation is current.
  • Identifies employee strengths and assets through regular relationship-building activities and deploys people based on their strengths to achieve high levels of performance and satisfaction.
  • Promotes and models a culture of reciprocal feedback in which ongoing and timely feedback is provided to all team members to support excellent performance.
What You’ll Bring

  • This position requires occasional physical requirements, such as stretching, bending, kneeling, walking.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification.
  • A clear Police Information Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Search, and an Intervention Record Check is required upon commencement of employment.
  • ASIST, NVCI and Alberta Wellness Initiative’s Brain Story training are core training requirements and must be completed within 6 months of employment.
  • Alberta childcare certification is a requirement and must be provided within 6 months of employment. Certification can be obtained through submission of transcripts and/or completion of a training course.
  • Previous leadership work in a shelter, supportive or transitional housing, or similar environment is an asset.
  • You have a strong understanding of issues specific to women and children experiencing domestic violence, homelessness, poverty, addictions, and mental health and recognize the importance of a holistic approach to supporting a woman’s health and well-being.
  • Post-secondary education in Social Work or other Human Services with a minimum of 3-5 years of related experience. A combination of education and experience not listed here may be considered.
