Job Description
Accountable to the NICU Clinical Manager, the Sr. Registered Respiratory Therapist is responsible to work with the interdisciplinary team to support and promote quality care delivery throughout the NICU and transition from NICU programs at McMaster Children’s Hospital. The Sr. Registered Respiratory Therapist is responsible for maintaining quality assurance for all aspects of related clinical operations, maintaining files and providing statistical reports utilizing these testing systems, provide patient education regarding their disease process and proper administration of medication, provide training/teaching of new staff and students and other duties as required/assigned.


  • Valid Basic Life Support Certification
  • Demonstrated ability to set and adjust priorities and organize work in response to department clinical and research needs
  • Demonstrated ability to liaise with various hospital departments and community partners effectively and collaboratively
  • Certified in NRP
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ventilator requirements for the micropremature population
  • Demonstrate commitment to lifelong learning
  • Demonstrate the philosophy of Family Centered Care and knowledge of developmental care
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to work within an interdisciplinary team
  • Successful completion of the Canadian Board of Respiratory Care (CBRC) exam
  • Current General Registration, in good standing with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario (CRTO)
  • Graduate of an accredited program in Respiratory Therapy
  • Recent 4 years’ experience in Neonatal ICU
  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal and patient teaching skills, utilizing principles of adult learning theories
  • Demonstrated commitment to maintaining and improving individual competencies as well as contributing to the education and development of staff and students
  • Experience, within the last 2 years, providing education and transition for complex care NICU population


As a condition of employment, you are required to submit proof of full COVID-19 vaccination to Employee Health Services.

Unit Summary


The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at McMaster Children’s Hospital is comprised of a Level III NICU, a Level II nursery and a neonatal transport team, providing medical and surgical care to neonates and their families per year and serving a broad geographic area within southern Ontario. The interdisciplinary team provides family-centered care with a strong focus on evidence-based best practice and continuous quality improvement. McMaster NICU is actively involved in a number of collaborative quality improvement initiatives provincially, nationally and internationally.

Mon- Fri Days, occasional weekends may be required
