Job Purpose


The Senior Manager, Wealth Management Taxation plays a key role in supporting advisors, planning specialists, and banking partners across Scotia Wealth Management by providing tax expertise and enhancing the delivery of the Total Wealth offering. The Senior Manager will be closely involved with key activities led by the Director. While many activities will be shared across the team, the incumbent will have specific accountabilities where they take a leading position.


Key Accountabilities


Enhance the delivery of the Total Wealth offering through the integration of advanced tax planning expertise by:


  • Capturing and socializing success stories connected to client engagements; and
  • Consulting with advisors and their HNW and UHNW clients on particular tax topics to provide them with pointed tax information and guidance highlighting planning options and strategies to consider, which they may implement with their own tax and legal advisors;
  • Continuously identifying opportunities to enhance the Advanced Planning and Services and the Wealth Management Taxation teams' service offerings.
  • Occasionally participating in business development activities and prospective client meetings;
  • Collaborating with a team of specialists to provide advanced tax planning strategies to high net worth (HNW) and ultra-high net worth (UHNW) clients as part of a holistic wealth planning process that clients may then consider and implement with their own tax and legal advisors;
  • Discussing with advisors and their HNW and UHNW clients advanced planning strategies regarding tax, trust and estate, intergenerational wealth transfer, business transition and succession, insurance, philanthropy, and education planning;


Take a leading role related to the Wealth Management Taxation team's thought leadership and article content creation by:


  • Reviewing content produced by advisors and other parts of the organization to ensure it is technically accurate and compliant with risk management guidelines.
  • Working closely with colleagues to drive the planning around the development of new content and the related communications strategy;
  • Writing and editing internal memos and bulletins regarding legislative tax changes, Federal Budget announcements, and tax planning best practices; and
  • Writing and developing tax thought leadership and article content for publication both internally and externally to be used by advisors and clients;


Contribute to the effective delivery of tax educational sessions for Canadian Wealth Management by:


  • Leveraging industry contacts and soliciting input from colleagues to identify external speakers to participate in sessions and collaborate on the development of content.
  • Preparing and presenting tax education and training content and material for internal professional development purposes as well as client-facing presentations;
  • Leading the facilitation of professional development activities for colleagues with more advanced tax knowledge; and


Requirements


  • Strong inclination towards strategic competencies – thinking, relationships, and influencing – that will support the ability to be innovative and evolve the Advanced Planning and Services offering;
  • The incumbent must be well suited to working independently and within a team environment; and
  • Some national travel will be required to present to Scotia Wealth Management team members, attend internal meetings in support of the business, as well as attend conferences.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills with the ability to adapt communication style based on audience, taking complex technical concepts and communicating them in plain language when necessary;


The Incumbent Must Be Highly Conversant On a Variety Of Tax Topics, Including


The position requires a high degree of specialized knowledge and experience.
  • The ability to read and interpret financial statements and personal, trust, and corporate income tax and information returns.
  • Uses and issues related to legal documents (wills, trusts, shareholder agreements, franchise agreements, etc.); and
  • Federal and Provincial income tax law pertaining to individuals and trusts;
  • Knowledge of U.S. income taxation and related issues;
  • Tax strategies related to leveraging, philanthropy, education, and strategic insurance planning;
  • Issues related to estates and trusts and applicable planning;
  • Taxation of Canadian Controlled Private Corporations (CCPCs) and their shareholders, and related planning issues such as business succession and transition, corporate reorganizations, intergenerational wealth transfer, and various corporate transactions;
The Ideal Candidate Must Have The Following
  • CPA Canada In-Depth Tax Program or MTax degree;
  • At least 7 years of experience in a professional organization providing tax planning and compliance for HNW and UHNW clients; and
  • Experience with writing client facing articles on cross border tax topics.
  • University degree;
  • Demonstrating a robust comprehension of the tax rules that apply to Canada-U.S. cross border scenarios, as well as the practical application of tax knowledge relevant to individuals who are dual citizens residing in Canada, Canadians frequently traveling to the U.S., Canadians owning U.S. assets, and those who are immigrating to/from the U.S.
  • In-depth experience in Canada-U.S. cross border taxation, including:
  • Professional designation (e.g. CPA, LLB);
  • Staying abreast of legislative changes pertaining to tax and estate planning laws in Canada and the U.S.; and
It is preferable that the ideal candidate have the following:
  • In-Depth Tax Issues for the Owner-Managed Business course;
  • Be fluent in speaking and understanding Mandarin and/or Cantonese;
  • Solid knowledge of marketplace and competitive practices.
  • Other professional designations (e.g. TEP, CFP, CLU);
  • Solid understanding of financial products and services they are helping advisors to support; and
