Position Title: Senior Financial Analyst, Technical Accounting
Team and Location: Finance – Calgary, AB
Position Summary:
Reporting to the Director, Technical Accounting and working closely in a team of 8, the successful candidate will be a key member of the Technical Accounting Team with cross-functional capability helping the Corporate Finance and Reporting teams as required. This role will liaise with finance teams from all of Parkland’s business segments. The role will be responsible for drafting and implementing corporate-wide accounting policies, contributing to process improvements and special projects and performing routine technical accounting processes.
On as-needed basis, the Senior Financial Analyst, Technical Accounting will also be involved in facilitating the preparation of the internal and external reporting documents and reporting on new acquisitions. In addition, the Senior Financial Analyst, Technical Accounting may also assist in the financial statement close cycles, routine and non-routine accounting matters, to ensure company controls and policies are executed based on business needs.

Key Responsibilities:
Technical Accounting:
  • Investigating and determining current accounting treatment through liaising with other divisions.
  • Completing other special projects, accounting working papers and tasks as assigned.
  • Enforcing and updating current accounting policies as well as communicating them to various Parkland divisions:
  • Maintaining monthly Technical Accounting workbooks on key processes (i.e. expected credit loss, hedge effectiveness, impairment indicator assessment, etc.).
  • Performing significant contract technical accounting review.
  • Researching new accounting standards, determining how they are applicable to Parkland and drafting the policy papers.
  • Providing and researching ad-hoc accounting advice to other divisions as required in a timely manner.
  • Preparing and presenting accounting treatments to divisions based on the business need.
  • Drafting and implementing corporate-wide accounting policies (including drafting policy papers on the new standards).
Financial reporting (which may include, but is not limited to):
  • Investigating, researching and analyzing information for the financial statements and MD&A, including coordinating with divisions to obtain information.
  • Working with the Financial Reporting team to prepare the quarterly and annual financial statements, MD&A and Audit Committee memos on the key accounting positions as needed. This will include preparing the supporting working papers to ensure disclosures are supported and compliant with IFRS requirements.
  • Owning and maintaining relevant controls as required.
  • Completion of the IFRS disclosure checklist.
Cross-functional Collaboration which may include, but is not limited to):
  • Working closely with the Financial Reporting (FR) Group on accounting issues and ensure complex or non-routine transactions are accounted for in accordance with IFRS.
  • Supporting various other Corporate teams, such as Tax, Treasury, Corporate Development, Investor Relations, Integrations, Procurement, Communications and others through providing technical accounting guidance, where requested.
  • Interacting with Corporate Accounting team to ensure accounting policies are consistently followed by Parkland reporting teams.
  • Responding to both internal and external audit requests as required.
Qualifications and Skills:
  • IFRS 16
  • Minimum of 6-8 years of relevant experience including a minimum of 4 years of experience working in a public accounting firm.
  • Experience in accounting for relevant non-financial industries (e.g. retail, manufacturing, marketing, distribution, downstream oil and gas, etc.).
  • Preference will be given to those with experience working with companies in high growth or acquisitive environments.
  • IFRS 15
  • Strong understanding of financial statement close processes and accounting matters applicable to public companies.
  • Strong technical knowledge and experience with public company accounting requirements, particularly with IFRS, is required. Experience with US GAAP is a plus.
  • IFRS 3
  • Experience with JD Edwards EnterpriseOne ERP and OneStream Corporate Performance Management is an asset.
  • IFRS 9
  • Knowledge of Canadian National Instruments rules governing the disclosure obligations for Canadian public entities. Knowledge of the US filing rules would be considered a plus, but not a requirement.
  • Experience as a manager in a “Big 4” public accounting firm in an auditing or advisory role, or as a Senior Financial Analyst in a Canadian Public Company is preferred.
  • Strong technical knowledge base and experience with IFRS accounting, with a focus on:
  • CPA or CPA, CA designation or equivalent.

  • Excellent Excel skills – must be comfortable working with large volumes of data using advanced Excel functions.
