About This Role

As a member company of Socomec SAS, Powersmiths has become the North American hub for integrated power conversion, energy storage, power distribution system design and manufacturing. With access to numerous technology centers beyond North America, Powersmiths is now designing and developing a new line of exciting and innovative products for the global power market.

As a result of our recent integration with Socomec SAS, Powersmiths has new and significant opportunities for growth.

This position is part of our very successful engineering product development team. This senior position is involved in developing new products related to power conversion, power quality and energy storage, facilitating CAD schematics, BOMs, UL/CSA/CE/FCC certifications, manufacturing support, and contributing to the commercialization of new products.

Major focus on system design, integration and troubleshooting in the areas of Energy Storage Systems. Must be familiar with major standards and regulations, operating modes (on grid, islanding) and the relevant transitions and regulations.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

● System design of energy storage systems, power conversion systems, power distribution, including appropriate analysis and selection of products and components.

● Develop cables, cable tray layouts, device/equipment cable interconnection diagrams and communication systems.

● Design detailed single line diagrams, electrical control schematics, wiring tables, panel general layouts using Solidworks. Prepare technical documentation including manuals, reports, etc.

● Perform EVT, DVT, and certification testing of high voltage, high power equipment (1500VDC, 690VAC, 0.5- 2 MVA and above).

● Provide support on manufacturing and production activities including preparation of manufacturing data packages and Bills of Materials (BOMs), User and Service manuals, Spare parts Lists, etc. using corporate ERP.

● Product support activities including test procedures and customer support.

● Coordinate UL/CSA/CE and FCC certification activities. Able to troubleshoot, identify and fix any issues preventing the system from being certified.

● Professionally work on the system integration design of energy storage and microgrids including appropriate analysis: sizing, architecture, standards, risks, etc.

● Provide technical support (remotely or at the customer site) for requests coming from the field at every stage of the project.

● Perform power system engineering analysis of industrial, commercial, and distribution utility electric power systems in the areas of coordination of protection, short-circuit calculation, arc flash hazard analysis, power flow, ground grid, and Harmonics.

● Design, simulation and analysis of control and power systems using meters, controllers and PLC’s

Essential Qualifications, Experience, and Skills

● Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering

● P.Eng designation or eligibility is an asset

● Approximately 10 years of hands-on design, test, and deployment experience in real-world electrical systems (e.g. UPS systems, energy storage systems, static transfer switches, inverters, etc.)

● Practical knowledge of UL/CSA/CE /FCC certification processes and associated standards. Ability to coordinate the certification process with the required authorities

● Knowledge of industrial instrumentation, automation and associated protocols.

● Familiarity with Solidworks Electrical is strongly preferred.

● Understanding of power distribution systems/microgrid, monitoring, control, and protection

● Knowledge of Labview and National Instrument hardware is an asset

● Practical knowledge of simulation and analysis of control and power systems utilizing meters, controllers and PLC’s

● Excellent computer literacy. Proficient with MS Office and GSuite tools is a must.

● Strong English language verbal and written communication skills.

● Strong technical writing skills; able to clearly convey concepts in writing and prepare concise technical documentation/manuals for various power systems products, including energy storage systems, static transfer switches etc.

● Ability to develop test plans, execute the tests, prepare and present test reports
