Job Description
SAFETY OFFICER, COAST MOUNTAIN HYDRO SERVICES INC.


Salary Range: $133,120 to $158,995 – Depending on education and experience


NOTE: This position is not part of the IBEW Local 258


Coast Mountain Hydro Services Inc. (CMH) is seeking a full-time Safety Officer to add to our small team of dedicated professionals to manage the operation and maintenance of our hydroelectric facilities.


CMH is an award-winning [Recipient of a 2019 Clean Energy BC (CEBC) award for Operational Excellence] run-of-the-river hydroelectric project – comprising the Forrest Kerr, McLymont and Volcano Hydroelectric Facilities. We are located in Northwestern BC, with the Coast Mountain Range to the west and Skeena Mountains to the east, approximately 100 km from the town of Stewart and within the Golden Triangle in Tahltan Territory.


CMH is owned by Axium, Manulife and the Tahltan Nation. With two active mines in proximity, and an estimated $365.9M of exploration expenditures incurred in the Northwest throughout 2021, CMH - which generates 300 megawatts, enough to power 225,000 homes – is providing a source of clean power to local Tahltan communities and to the exploration and mining industry.


Functional Responsibility


The Safety Officer reports to the CMH General Manager or delegate and is responsible for the development and administration of the safety and health programs in CMH to provide a safe work environment for all.


Principal Responsibilities


  • Perform periodic regulatory reviews to ensure CMH remains compliant with BC regulations;
  • Conduct periodic emergency response drills with crews, a shared responsibility with site management;
  • Assist management with incident investigations, incident cause determination and analysis;
  • Stop hazardous work until actions have been taken to reduce the hazards;
  • Assist line management and the Joint Health and Safety Committee to ensure workers are following legislated and CMH Safety and Health policy;
  • May be responsible for other duties as assigned.
  • Assist management to develop, collect and interpret key safety performance indicators;
  • Perform safety walks, random tool, equipment, and workplace inspections. Identify gaps and work with site management, supervisors and planners to develop solutions;
  • Provide input and assist in the development of changes to CMH Safety Rules, Policies and Programs;
  • Lead and assist all trades with the process of writing Safe Work Procedures for a variety of tasks;
  • Attend Joint Health and Safety Committee meetings and support the implementation of corrective actions;
  • Encourage staff to follow CMH Safety Rules, Policy and Programs;
  • Evaluate work procedures with field staff to identify potential hazards;
  • Conduct monthly safety meetings in consultation with site management;
  • Assist management to organize training for a variety of safety topics;


Qualifications


  • Demonstrated ability to implement and/or manage organizational safety systems;
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret regulations, procedures and safety matters relevant to projects and contractor safety management;
  • Registration as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) would be considered an asset;
  • Red Seal Trade Certificate (or equivalent education) and a Certificate or Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety plus, five years of related experience;
  • Experience with heavy industrial maintenance preferred;
  • Valid driver’s licence.
  • Experience in a run-of-river hydro generating station would be considered an asset;
  • Experience with computerized maintenance management systems such as Maximo, SAP or similar would be considered an asset;
  • Computer savvy with experience in MS Word, Excel, and Microsoft office suite software;

About this Opportunity:


  • A permanent camp has been constructed for the operations team. The facilities include private rooms with bathrooms, a weight room, entertainment area and other amenities.
  • The schedule will be 14 days on followed by 14 days off. Note that travel days occur on days outside of the 14 day shift. During time on, employees will be “on-call” in the case of emergencies.

Travel costs from employee's primary residence airport (in British Columbia or Alberta) to Terrace B.C. are covered by the company. Travel from Terrace to the worksite is done by driving with other co-workers in company vehicles.
