Job Description
The Lactation Consultant will provide care to antepartum and postpartum women and their newborns. Through this role, the Lactation Consultant will work to improve patient care, population health outcomes, evidence based practice and advance nursing practice related to breastfeeding. There will be an ongoing focus to support and educate staff and lactating women and their families to promote a breastfeeding friendly environment in hospital. The Lactation Consultant will also facilitate effective collaboration between HHS and community services and other obstetrical facilities with the goal of promoting a continuum of integrated services from the hospital into the community setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skill and ability in the assessment of women during both antepartum and postpartum periods
  • Current BCLS and NRP certification
  • Demonstrated teaching and presentation skills to promote staff development
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, implement and evaluate change in clinical practice
  • Demonstrated commitment to evidence based practice
  • Current International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) Certification
  • Demonstrated ability to understand population health data and use it to influence health outcome
  • Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse
  • Demonstrated knowledge, skill and ability in newborn assessment
  • Demonstrated ability to work within hospital policies and procedures
  • Current knowledge of the physiological, psychosocial and emotional needs of women who are pregnant and/or lactating
  • Evidence of continuing education initiatives related to perinatal nursing and lactation

Unit Summary
The Women's Reproductive Health and Newborn Care Program located at the McMaster Site offers obstetrical services to women during antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum phases of pregnancy, and as well to their healthy newborns. Patient care areas include: Maternity Registration, 4B, 4C, 4F and L&D. Individual patient care needs are met using a multidisciplinary approach within a family centered environment.
