**This position can be fully remote or hybrid near Mitacs offices in Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Ottawa or Calgary**


Reporting to the Director, Research, the Research Review Officer will contribute to maintaining Mitacs research quality standards by helping to manage peer review processes for Mitacs programs. This position will require a thorough understanding of Mitacs’s programs and mission, excellent judgment, the ability to perform under pressure, and strong communication and collaboration skills.


Responsibilities:


Handle research proposals for programs such as Accelerate, Elevate, and Globalink:

  • Invite external experts to review proposals and manage follow-up communications.
  • Prepare funding recommendations on proposals to the Mitacs Research Council.
  • Analyze proposals to identify external subject matter experts qualified to review.
  • Ensure timely completion of peer review.
  • Document/summarize feedback from external reviewers.
  • Prepare written feedback on research proposals to program applicants.


Manage the work of Research Review Consultants:

  • Review and finalize funding recommendations from RRCs.
  • Assign research proposals to Research Review Consultants (RRCs) to handle.
  • Ensure a balanced distribution of workload among RRCs.
  • Recruit, train, and mentor RRCs, as required.


Collaborate with other Mitacs departments:

  • Collaborate with other teams where shared workflows exist.
  • Support members of other teams in learning about the review process.
  • Represent the Research team in cross-departmental activities and organization-wide initiatives.
  • Participate in working groups, contribute to new initiatives, and facilitate improvements to existing procedures.


Required skills and expertise:


  • Excellent critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Master’s degree required, but PhD preferred
  • Able to effectively plan and organize work to prioritize multiple deadlines
  • Ability to grasp topics across a wide range of academic disciplines
  • Receptive to new ideas and diverse perspectives
  • Capable of working independently and in a collaborative team setting
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to synthesize and clearly present complex information
  • Preference may be given to candidates with subject area expertise in Environmental Science, another discipline with direct relevance to Northern/Arctic research, and/or for a candidate with lived experience as a member of an Indigenous community
