Job Description
As a member of the clinical team, using a client-Centred approach, the Registered Dietician is responsible for performing nutritional assessments and prescribing nutritional changes through education, goal setting and follow-up. Registered Dieticians in the Diabetes Care and Research Program are certified diabetes educators who function as diabetes experts with a commitment to care, education and research. They work collaboratively within the multi-disciplinary healthcare team under complex medical directives, and function as practitioners, staff and patient/family educators and consultants. Responsibilities include: co-management of complex diabetes patients within a health care team comprising of physician specialists, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, dietitians, a kinesiologist and a psychologist; supporting insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring; implementing the artificial pancreas in selected patients; tailoring and adjusting medications to prevent cardiovascular disease, eye disease, strokes, amputations and other diabetes consequences; developing, implementing and evaluating self-management plans for patients and healthcare learners; diabetes-focused health coaching for patients and their families; learning and implementing new diabetes technologies; counselling; case management; nursing clinical management; interacting with diabetes organizations and industry; public and professional education; public health and wellness promotion; and research in diabetes management and education. This role requires previous experience and comprehensive understanding of diabetes care, and an advanced level of clinical judgement and ability to function within a pre-determined set of medical directives.


  • Demonstrated application and knowledge of and experience in the research/evaluation process including: formulating researchable questions, designing a project, data collection, data analysis, and disseminating the results
  • Proficiency in various computer applications and information technology systems such as Meditech, Microsoft Work, Sovera
  • Knowledge of principals and practical application of applied nutrition and how to apply them in an adult population
  • Demonstrated excellence in developing interpersonal relationships, communication and problem solving skills and manage competing priorities within a rapidly changing health care environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously within an interdisciplinary team environment
  • Demonstrated ability to understand the principles of chronic disease management including self-management strategies, accommodating individual client needs and motivating patients toward positive outcomes
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills including presentation skills to small and large audiences (e.g. patient education groups, and health professional groups)
  • Baccalaureate degree in Applied Human nutrition or Baccalaureate of Science (Masters Preparation preferred) and successful completion of dietetic internship
  • Membership with Dietitians of Canada required
  • Up to date certification as a Certified Diabetes Educator
  • Previous ambulatory, and consultation experience a definitive asset
  • Demonstrated clinical and critical evaluation skills
  • Recent (3 years) experience in diabetes nutritional care where they have demonstrated the ability to apply current Diabetes Clinical Practice Guidelines and provide evidenced based diabetes management
  • Evidence of ability to develop and to employ a variety of learning resources and activities to address the multiplicity of client learning needs, learning styles, and ethnic/cultural sensitivities
  • Current registration in good standing with the College of Dietitians of Ontario

Unit Summary


The Diabetes Care and Research Program (DCRP) is a subspecialty clinic located within the Boris Clinic, at the MUMC Site. The DCRP provides multidisciplinary evidence-based diabetes education and management for adults with diabetes in an ambulatory setting. In addition to providing tertiary outpatient diabetes care for complex patients, it supports patients collaboratively with primary care physicians. The DCRP’s primary goals are to enhance the quality of life of individuals and their families by improving glucose control, preventing the development of diabetes-related complications, and providing opportunities for their involvement in research to find new ways of preventing and treating diabetes and its complications.
