Alex House, as a neighbourhood house, is place based, and takes an assets-based approach to working in community. We understand the potential of each individual to contribute to the wellness of our shared community, regardless of what brings them through our doors for the very first time.

We are seeking a mindful, passionate, and collaborative Property Manager. While the ideal candidate will have significant experience with hands on property management, including repair and maintenance, they should also value working with people from varied backgrounds, including 2SLGBTQ+, IBPoC, or other historically underrepresented groups.

Alex House is a member of the Association of Neighbourhood Houses of British Columbia, a non-profit community-based organization est. in 1894. Alex House operates multiple sites in South Surrey White Rock, with our main facility in Crescent Beach, where we operate on the stolen and occupied land of Semiahmoo Nation. The Crescent Beach site houses our Retreat & Event Centre, 4 child care classrooms, and hosts community programs in a facility with buildings that range in age from 1940’s to 1990’s. Alex House is committed to decolonizing our approach, while ensuring an anti-racism approach.

The Work:

The Property Manager helps to fulfill the mission, vision, and strategic objectives of Alex House through comprehensive management of the physical site, while supporting emergent issues at partner locations.Alex House’s main site includes 5 contained buildings including a commercial kitchen in the Dining Hall, and 2 smaller kitchens in the Lodge and Beach House. There are 7 seasonal buildings/cabins, as well as a workshop across the street. The Property Manager works in collaboration with the Director, Core Operations, Director, Child Care, Building Services Coordinator, and other program team members to ensure strong preventative and corrective maintenance for buildings, grounds, critical systems, and equipment.

Enjoying a blended role of management and hands-on responsibilities, the Property Manager is a dynamic individual, with a mind for creative problem solving and aptitude for hands-on work, and project development. The Property Manager is a key position in the successful operation of the center, ensuring program participants and rental groups enjoy facility experiences that are safe, comfortable, and memorable.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Property Manager is a full-time position (28-35 hours per week to be negotiated with successful candidate). The Property Manager is responsible for the year-round maintenance, repair or upgrade required to maintain the facility in good working order and appearance. This position is an onsite/in-person position. This will involve a variety of competencies, including:

•Applied skills (or ability to learn) in a variety of trades and maintenance areas (plumbing, carpentry, electrical, landscaping, and mechanical systems)

•Creative problem-solving ability and initiative

•Project management and budgeting skills

•Staff management, communication, and leadership skills

•Microsoft Office (Word & Excel) comprehension

•Physical ability and strength

Key Responsibilities:


Repair and Maintenance

•Carry out corrective, preventive, and predictive maintenance

•Repair and maintain buildings and equipment, landscaping, maintaining a safe site.


Creative Problem Solving and Initiative

•Engage in creative problem-solving processes to ensure the most practical and cost-effective solution is determined


Project Management and Budgeting

•Developing and monitor projects, and maintenance budgets.

•Project manage on site repairs and projects, including project reports.

Staff Management

•Support incl. interview and recruit janitorial/custodial/caretakers employees for weekday and weekends.

•Provide comprehensive training and support to custodial and maintenance team members.

•Oversee day to day work of Building Services Coordinator, and their team incl. workplace safety, provide management support and guidance.

Communication

•Deliver verbal and written reports to the Executive Director regarding facility operations, inclusive of key decisions, annual reports, ongoing project management, staffing updates, or concerns.

•Ensure ongoing open and clear communication with Executive Director and leadership team.

•Work in collaboration with all Alex House team members and volunteers to enhance program operation by maximizing facility potential.

•Volunteer work groups.

•Respond to building and grounds related evening and weekend callouts when required

Leadership

•Assume a leadership role in building and grounds decisions

•Take a leadership role within Alex House and representing Alex House in the community as requested.

•On Call – evening and weekend support to facilities team

Experience

•A minimum of five practical experience in a construction-related role

•Post-secondary education or trade certificate

  • Experience in a not for profit/social service environment desirable.

•WCB Level 2 First Aid Certificate or ability to obtain one

•Valid British Columbia Class 4 (must have Class 5)

•Demonstrated experience with developing and managing budgets

•Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team – must be a self- starter

•Ability to work in a fast-changing and multi-faceted environment

•Excellent interpersonal and communications skills

•Proficient English language skills, verbal and written

•Ability to respect and work with a diverse range of co-workers, clients and community members including children, youth, and families


Additional Requirements


•Criminal record check including Vulnerable Sector Search (VSS)

•May require tasks beyond what is listed on job description to support overall operations of Alex House.

• The work is physically demanding indoor/outdoor in all weather conditions,

requiring candidate to be in good health, and able to complete the demands

of the job.

Details

•This is a full time 35 hr/week position, with benefits.Hiring rate is -$30.93 – 34.27, with full range to $38.00 on current ANHBC hiring grid.

•Compensation package includes comprehensive extended health and medical benefits, Employee and Family Assistance Program, and a Defined Benefits Pension Plan.
