Program Facilitator
Nanaimo Family Life Association is a non-profit organization providing holistic personal and
professional growth programs founded on the passionate belief that Healthy individual and family relationships are the heart of a strong and resilient community. Our programming is designed to address the unique needs of the individual and offered in an atmosphere of respect, inclusion and compassion.
•Gender Journeys is a group for adult members of the LGBTQ2SAI+ community.
•Transcend Nanaimo is a group for youth who are members of the LGBTQ2SAI+ community.
Both of these groups require a facilitator who can introduce structure and guidelines that will enhance the wellness of the LGBTQ2SAI+ community in Nanaimo.Facilitators have lived experience with the identity and/or subject matter of the group. They are responsible for creating and maintaining a safe and inclusive space.
These groups aim to build community, share safety and advocacy concerns and solutions, and to gain access to key support providers in the community while simultaneously contributing to knowledge about the needs of trans those seeking service.
Each week, the groups gather to hear a guest speaker, be presented with information, engage in supportive dialogue and/or engage in support activity.
Reporting to a Clinical Supervisor, the Gender Journeys/Transcend Nanaimo Program Facilitator is skilled in harm reduction perspectives, group facilitation, workshop delivery, knowledge of community resources, and providing general support.
The Gender Journeys/Transcend Nanaimo Program Facilitator must work to deliver a continuum of ethical, peer- based, responsive supports informed by our service recipients’ perspectives and preferences.
Specific duties for this position include:
• Establish, in consultation with Clinical supervisor, program structure for both groups including:
·Group content
·Ethical practices
·Healthy boundaries
·Safety of members
·Comprehensive Intake process
• Work with the Clinical supervisor to plan workshops for the calendar year that are informative, interesting, and oriented to building wellness, social networks and community connections;
• Share information about this initiative among local trans folks in a way that is respectful of privacy concerns;
• Connect participants to other Peers programs and community resources to address support needs;
• Liaise with guest speakers for the group, including planning meeting times and preparing the guest speakers to deliver educational and service materials that meet the needs of group members;
• Maintain a list of community contacts for the group, and service options, based on guest speakers as well as the identification of trans friendly service providers;
• Document basic statistics on all aspects of program delivery as required by funders;
• Engage professionally and collaboratively with service participants colleagues, & partner agencies (via phone, via e-mail, & in person);
• Adherence to NFLA’s organizational policies;
• Submit financial and payroll expenses on required forms.
Skills and Knowledge:
• Knowledge of and ability to connect with target population;
•Experience working with youth; facilitating groups and/or engaging youth in programming;
• Experience facilitating group education;
·Knowledge of local health and social service agencies
• Excellent organizational & time-management skills;
•Approachable, non-judgmental, empathetic, & calm in conflict or crisis;
• Strong interpersonal skills & collaborative, team oriented service approach;
• Commitment to ethical service delivery including, but not limited to: confidentiality, conflict of interest & conflict resolution;
• Commitment to applying social justice principles to health & social care;
• Word processing, database & social networking computer skills;
• Completion of training or previous experiences in non-profit social services or healthcare an asset;
• Additional certification/training in Nonviolent Communication, Nonviolent Crisis Intervention, crisis prevention, conflict resolution, and trauma informed practice are an asset;
•Willingness to work within a feminist organization, committed to social justice and inclusion.
Job details and certification requirements:
• 15hrs per week
• Pay rate is $27/hour
• Criminal Record Check required.
