Thales provides world-leading Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) and interlocking for mass rail transit applications globally. The Centre of Competence for Urban Rail Signalling is located right before you at mid-town Toronto. As the largest office in Canada, we house a department for every step of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC)! This includes Software, Hardware, Systems Design, Verification & Validation, Operations, etc. The supporting corporate shared services teams in Finance, Human Resources and IT is also located at the office. The Network Deployment Specialist is responsible to implement and configure network designs, troubleshoot and analyse communication networks for communication based train control (CBTC) systems that meet customer, system and industry requirements for throughput and security, which includes design support and updates. To manage and lead one or several concurrent deliveries of the communication network design with a matrix organization, being responsible for the overall work package delivery. To support implementation, troubleshooting and resolution of data network communication systems with travel on site expected up to 50% of the time.


Key Responsibilities:


Technical:


  • Interfaces and builds strong working relationships with Software, Hardware and IVVQ groups to ensure timely analysis and resolution of in-house and field test issues.
  • Support and develop technical interfaces to other groups within the company.
  • Verify and validate a communication network design (e.g. via testing, analysis, etc.).
  • Analyse a communication network design from various perspectives, such as reliability, security, scalability, maintainability, deployment and more.
  • Prepare and execute design reviews and discussions with internal and external parties.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation and strict configuration control of a communication network deployment.
  • Based on a design, create communication network configurations including process documentation, which includes wired network, wireless network and IT components.
  • Prepare deployment packages for remote sites and deploy accordingly through guidance and training of site teams where necessary.
  • Deploys the solutions in the lab and in the field, including supporting testing and commissioning activities.
  • Develop tools and utilities that assist in various stages of the communication network design and delivery, such as testing tools, deployment automation tools.
  • Troubleshoot and investigate various complex network issues in-house and on site.


Non-Technical


  • Prepare and deliver regular status reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Prepare and assess labor and equipment estimates for new functions or activities.
  • Plan deployment and troubleshooting activities in order to meet project milestones.
  • Optimize work within the project to improve efficiency.
  • Manage technical interactions with other groups within the company, site installation, deployment teams and the customer.
  • Assume a project lead role, maintaining full control and responsibility over delivery of the communication network work package within a project.


Key Requirements:
  • Excellent understanding and knowledge of communication network concepts, principles and design framework:
  • Experience with Windows-, Unix-based operating systems, MS SQL Server, Active Directory, etc.
  • Redundancy and high-availability technologies
  • Experience in configuration, deployment and maintenance of various IT components
  • 3 - 5 years of experience in communication network design, site deployment, commissioning and maintenance of networks (wired, wireless, IT).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Network, Electrical or Computer Engineering or equivalent.
  • Ethernet/IP-based networking (switching/routing protocols)
  • Network analysis and troubleshooting.
  • Good knowledge and experience of security concepts is desirable,
  • RF design, survey and troubleshooting (802.11, LTE, 5G, Fluidmesh)


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Industry certification is a plus.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Rail signaling knowledge is a plus.
