Job Title: Materials Manager
Reports to: Director of Procurement & Strategic Sourcing August 2023
Position Summary
Located at our Scarborough facility, the Materials Manager will be responsible for overseeing and optimizing all aspects of the materials management process, ensuring efficient and cost-effective procurement, storage, and distribution of materials for our operations. The successful incumbent will be accountable for responsible for maintaining accurate inventory records, optimizing stock levels, and overseeing the movement of goods throughout the supply chain to ensure adequate availability while minimizing carrying costs.
Major Responsibilities
- Manage the processing of purchase orders, addressing overdue orders with prompt follow-up with the team
- Assist in the tracking and reporting of monthly key performance indicators identifying opportunities and creating necessary action plans
- Perform other duties/projects as assigned
- Determine, manage, and maintain accurate inventory levels to sustain the growth of the business between Raw Materials, WIP and Finished Goods.
- Regularly review status reports to identify areas of concern and initiate corrective action as required
- Assist in the administration of procurement policies and practices
- Ability to manage a team and delegate tasks based on roles, responsibilities and workload
- Assists in the development of strategic purchasing plans
- Support the procure to pay (P2P) process and resolve any invoice discrepancies, as directed by Accounts Payable
- Assist in the resolution of quality, commercial or servicing issues relating to suppliers
- Assist in the set up and running of MRP function to provide purchase and manufacturing advice
- Oversee physical inventory count and perform regular cycle counts
- Act as an expert in the application of process improvement tools
- Negotiate and purchases goods and services in a timely and cost-effective manner from approved suppliers
- Create and establish FIFO procedures to support business model and ensure proper flow of goods and services.
- Train new employees in the purchasing process and how to use the purchasing system
- Ensure that all procured items meet the required quality standards and specifications.
Skills and Experience
- Results-oriented focus is essential, as is the ability to work in a fast-paced, changing environment and manage multiple deliverables simultaneously
- Strong information seeking and problem solving abilities.
- Certification in Purchasing/Supply Chain Management (CSMP) or Inventory Management (CPIM), or working towards is considered and asset
- Strong understanding of lean concepts and process improvements
- MRP/ERP experience is essential to this role, preferably MISys
- Must be willing to work as a member of a team and be flexible in undertaking a variety of duties that will contribute to the success of the organization
- Eager to learn new processes/systems and be proactive in continuous improvement.
- Strong MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and computer literacy.
- Minimum of 3 years in a supervisor or people leader capacity
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to practice empathy.
- 5-7 years’ of relevant role experience in Purchasing/Supply Chain Management in a manufacturing environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- College or University degree in mechanical/industrial engineering, management or business administration
- Proven track record in developing employees to attain higher performance standards.
