Job Description

Position:Material Intake Technician

Rate:$23.00/hour.

Schedule:Monday to Friday-7:30am - 4:00pm

Shifts may vary depending on production needs.

Location:Plastic Pollution Emergency Response Facility

3300 Chatham Street, Unit #61 located in Steveston Harbour, Richmond, BC.

Job Overview

Are you passionate about the environment, highly motivated and interested in making a meaningful impact? We are looking for hard-working people to join our Plastic Pollution Emergency Response Facility's crew that assists in managing incoming debris from ocean, shoreline and marine industrial cleanups from the Pacific Northwest region. These incoming materials contain high amounts of aquatic organic material.

Candidates are required to work onsite at the Plastic Pollution Emergency Response Facility in Steveston Harbour (southwest Richmond) from Monday to Friday from 7:30am to 4:00pm. Shifts will vary depending on production needs with previous notice.

The job consists of processing marine debris such as rope, buoys, barrels, oyster baskets, styrofoam through different recycling stations. This position involves significant physical labour, standing and bending for long periods of time, and requires the ability to complete repetitive tasks, such as untangling and handling rope.The position requires the team member to follow standard operating procedures, adopt safe work practices and maintain a clean work environment in accordance with BC OHS regulations.

While most work activities are completed indoors, outdoor activities in any weather conditions are also part of the work environment. We frequently receive ocean-scented debris, so this job calls for a comfortable tolerance around strong smells and getting your hands (gloves!) dirty when handling these materials.

Job Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Organize, track and document product material in different stages of development;
  • Offload, receive, prepare and organize shipments of marine debris from Ocean Legacy and affiliated partners;
  • Use of hand tools and power tools such as: gas ax, sawsall, chop saw
  • Maintain daily product specification standards and facility sanitization standards;
  • Sort marine debris into its various resin codes and subcategories;
  • Feeding material into large, industrial machinery such as shredders, grinders, and granulators.
  • Work various stations on the plastic manufacturing processing line;
  • Daily safety assessment and quality control procedures including: personal PPE, FLRA, COVID-19 protocols, daily collective stretch breaks;

Ideal Candidate

  • Strong communication skills;
  • Enthusiastic and positive attitude;
  • Punctual and reliable;
  • Familiarity with power tools and basic carpentry skills, or a willingness to learn.
  • Attention to detail and organized;
  • Self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision;
  • Good work ethic and work endurance;
  • Works well in team environments;
  • Comfortable working around large machinery;

  • Assets

    • Experience with power tools such as chop saws, gas axes or sawzalls.
    • WHMIS 2015;
    • Occupational First Aid certificate;
    • Forklift certificate;
    • Previous experience in production centers, recycle depots, warehouses or construction;
