Position Summary -


Through taking a holistic view of Alberta and the role that the visitor economy plays in supporting the province both economically and culturally, the Manager, Investor Insights & Performance brings market intelligence and insights to the investment community and tourism industry to enhance the likelihood of securing capital to build the visitor economy across the province. They will also lead day-to-day performance evaluation and governance of Travel Alberta’s own industry and aviation investment programs to optimize return of investment in support of Destination Development’s annual plan.


As a key member of the team, they will work closely with multiple team members including the Manager Destination Development Strategy the Director, Industry Investments & Commercial Partnerships, the Director, Destination Development, and the Business Intelligence Team. They will be a central player in helping drive Travel Alberta’s efforts in driving a pipeline of investment opportunities that require participation of private capital investors, local communities, economic development agencies, and the Government of Alberta. They will also work closely with the Director, Industry Investments & Commercial Partnerships on managing Travel Alberta’s aviation fund that aims to grow direct air capacity into the province through targeted investment with select air carriers.


In addition to their external focus, the Manager, Investor Insights & Performance will work closely with the Chief Commercial Officer and Business Intelligence Team and be responsible for tracking and reporting the unit’s overall performance as measured by the annual unit scorecard. This work includes supporting the measurement framework (unit scorecard), measure design, performance reporting and governance. This work is in support of Travel Alberta’s quarterly business reviews, mid-year reports, annual report, as well as briefing notes to the CEO and Travel Alberta’s Board. Lastly, as a company ambassador with significant engagement with external stakeholders they will always need to have the highest level of professionalism and discretion.


Contributions & Accountabilities


Lead analysis of Travel Alberta’s pan-Albertan investment program


  • Supports the Director, Industry Investments & Commercial Partnerships on the development and management of an investment advisory council to Travel Alberta
  • Collaborates with Manager Destination Development Strategy, Business Intelligence Team, and 3rd party vendors to apply insights and apply tourism economic analyses in support of prospectuses for accommodations, resorts and attractions received from investors
  • Liaises between the Business Intelligence Team and Destination Development Managers to provide industry stakeholders and partners with meaningful research, data and insights to support regional decision-making – particularly around Tourism Development Zones
  • Develops analysis approach and assessment of investment proposals and accompanying communications that convey a clear understanding of the unique tourism investment opportunities throughout the province – particularly in the ten tourism development zones. This work will include working closely with vendors who deliver expertise and services in this area, as well as the Manager Destination Development Strategy.


Strategic Project Management of Industry & Aviation Investment Program


  • Design and implement performance management systems to evaluate the effectiveness of the programs and ensure they meet Travel Alberta’s goals and the needs of operators.
  • Reporting of performance and insights to the Chief Commercial Officer for multiple audiences including industry committees, board, and shareholder
  • Tracking and reporting on the performance of investments for the board, shareholder, and stakeholders.
  • Builds and maintains effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders to further advance key initiatives and form strategic partnerships for success
  • Support airline partners in meeting reporting requirements,
  • Working with 3rd party vendor to assess airline investment program proposals,
  • Liaises with officials from multiple levels of government to gain research insights and intelligence in support of tourism stakeholders
  • Reporting of performance and insights to the Chief Commercial Officer for multiple audiences including industry committees, board, and shareholder
  • Develops and delivers on targeted regulatory initiatives for internal and external stakeholders to advance commercial development
  • Records management of the programs, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of data as well as required public grant disclosures.
  • Propose recommendations on investment strategies, protocols and processes for each program to optimize them each year.
  • Supports the operations, results reporting and insights and governance of Travel Alberta’s industry investment grant programs including:

Performance Reporting for the Unit


  • Responsible for special projects and other duties as assigned by the Chief Commercial Officer and Director, Industry Investments & Commercial Partnerships
  • Supports the collection, assembly, and reporting of team unit results as reported in quarterly business reviews, mid-year and annual reports, board reports, and on an ad-hoc basis as required.
  • Contribute to the design of the annual department/unit scorecard.


Who You Are


  • A minimum of 5+ years of direct experience working in the hotel, real-estate, economic development or tourism sector
  • Bachelor’s degree in commerce, business administration or relevant field of study or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • You have significant experience leading projects and engaging with multiple business teams and 3rd party vendors to fulfill organizational needs
  • You are capable of operating in dual modes in the same day and are completely comfortable splitting time between strategic thinking to program execution and reporting
  • You are naturally curious, have a strong desire and willingness to learn, and apply your learnings to your work
  • You easily build rapport with others and can relate openly and comfortably with diverse groups including entrepreneurs, government officials, private capital investors, C-level executives, as well as indigenous communities and peoples
  • You can link disparate data sources and facts to make compelling investment proposals and provide businesses with research and information to support their decision making
  • You have experience developing and reporting on, grant/investment programs or corporate investment projects
  • You have first-hand experience in supporting the development of strategies and proposals to promote investment opportunities in partnership with municipal, regional and national stakeholders
  • You are willing to confront difficult conversations with empathy and feedback when investment opportunities are not feasible

  • You bring a strong understanding of the visitor economy ecosystem ranging from accommodations, attractions, transportation providers, DMOs, communities and travelers and have extensive industry knowledge
  • You have strong project management skills that reflect your ability to prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly with excellent attention to detail and achieving deadlines
  • You can synthesize facts, both structured and unstructured information, and use a broad set of communications modalities (slides, written reports, briefing notes, public presentations) to engage both internal colleagues and external stakeholders
