Job Description

For approximately eight (8) months of the year, this role works in the position of Labourer (Parks) reporting to the Supervisor of Operations (Parks), and is under the daily direction of the Working Foreperson(s).

The Labourer (Parks) is responsible for:

  • Providing excellent customer service, including responding to inquiries/concerns from the general public and/or staff; and
  • Performing general duties within the Grounds Maintenance workgroup such as seeding, sodding, leaf/debris clean-up and other related ground maintenance and/or repair duties;
  • Assisting the General Maintenance workgroup with repairs/maintenance of various park facilities/structures, garbage collection as well as preparation and clean-up for special events;
  • Ensuring all equipment and/or tools are operated in a safe and professional manner;
  • Winter snow and/or ice control operations;
  • Preforming general duties within the Forestry workgroup such as planting, pruning, chipping, watering, mulching and/or removals;
  • Primarily, assisting the Horticulture/Turf workgroup with annual flower bed preparation and ongoing maintenance such as fertilizing, watering, weeding and/or removals;
  • Other duties as required and assigned.

For approximately four (4) months of the year, this role works in the position of Equipment Operator Grade I reporting to the Supervisor of Operations (Roads/Traffic), and is under the daily direction of the Working Foreperson(s).

The Equipment Operator Grade I is responsible for:

  • Operating and maintaining vehicles over 11,000 kg., G.V.W., including single and tandem axle vehicles, and accessory equipment;
  • Other duties as required and assigned.
  • Involvement in other road work, including sweeping, shouldering, patching, repairing washouts, maintenance, resurfacing and ditching;
  • Operating all vehicles and/or equipment skilfully and safely;
  • Involvement in winter snow operations, including snow removal, sanding/salting and ploughing of roads and sidewalks;
  • Loading, hauling and unloading of various materials and supplies;

What You Bring To Our Team

As the successful applicant, you must possess:

  • The ability to operate various tools and equipment in a safe manner;
  • Strong reasoning, numerical, technical, analytical and researching skills to ensure work is completely safely and accurately;
  • A minimum of one (1) year directly related experience with parks and/or grounds maintenance;
  • A well-developed interpersonal and public relations skills to appropriately respond to residents concerns and establish positive working relationships with all staff;
  • A successful completion of Defensive Driving training;
  • A valid Class “DZ” Driver’s Licence, maintained in good standing;
  • A demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment as well as independently with minimal supervision.
  • A secondary school graduation diploma;
  • A demonstrated ability to adhere to the Occupational Health and Safety Act;
  • A minimum of one (1) year demonstrated experience operating vehicles over 11,000 k.g., G.V.W., including tandem axle trucks;
  • Physically fit and capable of performing strenuous physical labour with heavy lifting up to 50 lbs. in varying weather conditions;
  • A demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in written form;

  • Labourer (Parks): $25.79 – $32.26 per hour (Band G)
  • Equipment Operator Grade I: $27.56 - $34.46 per hour (Band F)

Hours:

Monday through Friday – 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (approximately April to mid-November)

Sunday through Friday – 11:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. (approximately mid-November to April)

For each position: eight (8) hour shifts, forty (40) hours per week.

Flexible hours are required during winter control and emergency situations.
