Job Description
If you dream of exploring remote worlds using advanced robotic technologies, we’ll take you there.

Operating on oceans around the world from Victoria BC, Open Ocean Robotics is a rapidly growing startup transforming how we understand our oceans through better data. We are leaders in solar-powered autonomous boats, also called uncrewed surface vehicles (USVs), that voyage inhospitable ocean environments for -extended missions. Combined with advanced sensors and data analytics and producing no greenhouse gases or risk of oil spills, we offer a safer, more effective and affordable way of gaining ocean insights. We are transforming how we study, protect and utilize our oceans, and are helping to build an ocean IoT.

We’re driven by a pioneering spirit to push boundaries and make the seemingly impossible possible.

Core Responsibilities

  • Work in a collaborative environment with team members in field operations, oceanographic sciences, engineering, and business
  • Assist with writing detailed field and project reports with a focus on describing data acquisition methods, analysis methods and discussing results of analysis
  • Work with project manager and technical team to support customer projects with responsibilities that include project leadership, scheduling, and cross-team collaboration
  • Analyze other oceanographic data, including ocean temperature, salinity, turbidity, chlorophyll-a, etc.
  • Provide field support and planning, including scheduling, training, and overseeing scientific data collection
  • Support the collection, organization and analysis of oceanographic, meteorological, and other maritime data
  • Analyze acoustic data to identify marine mammal species and call types from auditory listening and inspection of spectrograms, identify vessel noise and background sounds levels.
  • Participate and assist in USV deployments, including mission planning, launch and recovery, and piloting

Requirements

  • Strong organizational, planning, and prioritization skills
  • Adaptable and enthusiastic about a startup environment which includes wearing multiple hats, implementing new systems and striving for a shared goal
  • Strong verbal and written communication capabilities with the ability to communicate scientific information in a clear and understandable manner
  • Minimum of an undergraduate degree in Ocean Sciences, Marine Biology, or similar
  • Demonstrated experience in acoustic and other oceanographic data analytics, field work and related activities (1+ years or equivalent)
  • Be passionate about advancing innovative technologies, making an impact and scaling a startup company

This position is located in Victoria, BC and is required to work in our offices. Open Ocean Robotics does not support work visas at this time. This is a 12-month internship.
