Job Description

Reporting to: Manager, Community Programs and Resources and Chief Executive Officer


Overview:

Melanoma Canada (MC), located in Oakville, ON, was founded in 2009 as a response to the need for patients in Canada to have a nationally-based organization that provides a strong voice for advocacy and outstanding support programs for melanoma patients and their families.


Position Summary:

Melanoma Canada is currently searching for an energetic and committed individual for our summer student program. This new role will report to the Manager, Community Programs and Resources and Chief Executive Officer and will be responsible for assisting in evaluating MC’s current patient support programs and make recommendations for improvements. Additionally this position will assist in coordinating the development of new patient and physician education programs.


The candidate will be responsible for working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to strengthen and improve MC’s patient programs.


Eligibility Requirements:

To be eligible, the individual must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment**; and,
  • Be between 15 and 30 (inclusive) at the start of the employment*;
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.


*The individual must be 15 at the beginning of the employment period. The individual may be more than 30 at the end of the employment period as long as the individual was 30 at the beginning of the employment period.


Position start date: June or July 2023 for approximately 8 week duration


Hourly wage: $15.50 per hour/ 35 hours per week


Schedule: Monday to Friday, with some flexibility in hours when requested


Working conditions: Given the current COVID-19 regulations, the successful candidate will work from a home office. The successful candidate is required to have their own computer and telephone. MC will reimburse the cost of internet and telephone used for business purposes.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Identify needs for revisions, new resources, materials, increased engagement opportunities
  • Works with MC staff to manage the distribution and inventory of printed and electronic program materials, as needed.
  • Evaluate MNC programs
  • Works with MC staff to develop new patient programming
  • Works with MC staff and Medical Advisory Council to develop content for educational and informational materials


Qualifications:

Candidates are current students pursing their undergraduate or post-graduate degree in public health, health promotion, health research or related discipline; or social work with a concentration in community health or community organization or an equivalent combination of education and experience and a passionate interest in health promotion and research. Ideal candidates are upper-level undergraduate/graduate students with a background in social sciences or public health is ideal for familiarity with the topic, but not required.


In addition, the candidate will offer:

  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Reliable, hard-working and committed, compassionate, passionate individual who wants to make a difference in their community, and whom is accountable for their work and projects
  • Strong problem solving, priority setting, decision making skills, and attention to details
  • Creative initiative for the design and presentation of research findings
  • Basic knowledge of program evaluation methodology, logic model design, descriptive statistics and scientific writing.
  • Beginner knowledge of creating and maintaining databases
  • Ability to multitask
  • Program development and promotion experience preferably in healthcare
  • Superior computer skills including advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
