Head Grower - Floriculture
Ontario
Salary - $100,000 to $140,000
A leading provider of high-quality plants and flowers in Ontario, Canada, is seeking a dynamic and experienced Head Section Grower to join our team. With over 50 years of expertise in the horticulture and floriculture industries, our client is known for its commitment to excellence and sustainable growing practices. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to our clients thriving organization and help shape the future of our greenhouse operations.
Responsibilities:
As the Head Grower, you will be responsible for overseeing the cultivation and production of a designated section within our clients greenhouse facility. Your key responsibilities will include:
- Technical Expertise: Utilize your extensive knowledge of greenhouse production techniques, including climate control, lighting, and irrigation systems, to maximize crop yield, quality, and efficiency.
- Research and Innovation: Stay up to date with the latest trends, technologies, and best practices in greenhouse growing. Explore and implement innovative techniques to enhance crop quality, productivity, and sustainability.
- Quality Assurance: Implement and maintain strict quality control protocols to ensure compliance with industry standards and customer expectations. Conduct regular inspections and implement corrective actions when necessary.
- Crop Management: Manage all aspects of crop production, including planting, irrigation, fertilization, pest and disease control, pruning, and harvesting, while ensuring optimal growth conditions and quality standards are met.
- Staff Leadership: Supervise and provide guidance to a team of growers, assistants, and laborers, fostering a positive and collaborative work environment. Train and mentor team members to enhance their skills and knowledge.
- Data Analysis: Monitor and analyse crop performance data, identifying trends and implementing strategies for continuous improvement. Make data-driven decisions to optimize production processes and minimize waste.
- Inventory Management: Collaborate with the production and sales teams to forecast crop needs and plan production schedules accordingly. Ensure accurate inventory records and manage stock levels effectively.
Qualifications:
To succeed in this role, you should possess the following qualifications:
- Education and Experience: A degree in Horticulture, Agriculture, or a related field is preferred. Proven experience in a greenhouse growing environment, with a minimum of 5 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
- Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of greenhouse growing practices, including climate control, irrigation systems, pest and disease management, and crop nutrition. Familiarity with hydroponic and sustainable growing methods is an asset.
- Analytical Thinking: Proficiency in analysing data and utilizing it to drive operational improvements. Experience with crop monitoring and control systems is advantageous.
- Leadership Skills: Excellent leadership and communication abilities, with a track record of effectively managing and motivating teams. Demonstrated problem-solving skills and the ability to make informed decisions under pressure.
- Organizational Skills: Exceptional organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines. Attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high-quality standards.
