Job Opportunity: Grower / Assistant Grower

Days/Hours: Full-time; flexibility required as hours vary based on season and on-call rotations

Compensation Type: Salary; compensation based on experience

Job Summary:

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Grower or Head Grower to join a leading commercial greenhouse grower. In this role, you will be responsible for the care, cultivation, and maintenance of fresh produce products. You will collaborate with the Head Grower to plan and execute growing activities that align with production schedules and quality standards. Your expertise in plant health, cultivation techniques, and pest management will contribute to the success of the greenhouse operations.

Core Expectations:

• Support the Head Grower and perform assigned duties as needed.
• Provide training to new employees in growing techniques and activities.
• Assist in developing new growing procedures and cultivation techniques.
• Apply fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides as directed.
• Stay updated on industry trends and technological advancements.
• Maintain accurate records of growing techniques, production, and trends.
• Collaborate with the Head Grower to plan and implement growing activities in line with production schedules.
• Monitor and adjust environmental conditions such as humidity, temperature, and light to ensure optimal plant growth.
• Inspect and evaluate crops regularly to identify pests, diseases, and substandard plants; take appropriate corrective actions.

• Knowledgeable in plant identification, diseases, and insect pests.
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, for effective interaction with team members, stakeholders, and customers.
• Proficient in calculating proportions, percentages, and volumes for nutrient applications.

Education and Experience:

• Fluency in both English and Spanish (Required)
• WHIMS Training
• High school diploma or equivalent (Required)
• 2-4 years of greenhouse experience (Required)
• Knowledge of Hoogendoorn Climate Controls (Asset)
• Legally able to work in Canada
• General Horticultural courses (Asset)
• Forklift Certification (Asset)
• 6 months to 1 year of supervisory experience (Asset)

Qualifications:

• Must have reliable transportation.
• Proficiency in plant identification and problem diagnosis.
• Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate growing activities.
• Strong verbal and analytical skills; computer literacy in Excel, Word, and greenhouse software.
• Willingness to work weekends on an on-call rotation.

Key Accountabilities:

• Plan, organize, and coordinate growing activities.
• Identify plant issues, diseases, and pests.
• Supervise labour, assign tasks, and provide coaching.
• Coordinate pest and disease monitoring with the biological control department.
• Enforce SOPs and crop hygiene practices.
• Maintain records on crop growth data.
