JOB OPPORTUNITY


GIS & Natural Resource Technician

Location: Thunder Bay, ON & Surrounding Region


We are seeking to hire an intermediate-level natural resource professional with an emphasis on field and GIS-related skills. The person will be a motivated, self-starter who enjoys a variety of tasks and can adapt to a rapidly changing environment. If you enjoy a variety of projects with a flexible work schedule and the option to work remotely, then this position may be for you.


DUTIES (may include depending on experience and interest)


  • Set-up, maintenance, and use of all related technology and machinery (ie. mobile mapping, inReach, drone, truck radio, work truck, google suite, laptops, atv, work trailer, etc)
  • Assist in resource planning and Firesmart Planning for communities
  • Manage and edit GIS data in a variety of programs (ArcGIS, QGIS, etc)
  • Conduct drone surveys for a variety of clients (forestry, mining, etc.)
  • Block boundary and road layout layout: identify and classify streams and apply appropriate forest health prescription to protect environmental values, conduct species at risk surveys, identify AOC (areas of concern), determine sensitive sites for winter harvest or modified prescriptions in regards to operability
  • Assist in resource road surveys and planning
  • Conduct forest compliance surveys and report compilation
  • Water crossing assessments for culvert and bridge installations
  • Create and edit maps in ArcGIS


QUALIFICATIONS


  • First-Aid and CPR-A, AED certified
  • Confident and communicative
  • Numeracy skills
  • Coachable mindset
  • G-level driver’s license
  • Relational; our intern will work with clientele
  • Minimum education requirement: College diploma in a related field
  • Well-versed in current technological systems (ie. laptops, phones, tablets, google suite, excel, email, etc.)
  • Enjoys a variety of work tasks - from desk, to field, meetings, equipment maintenance, etc.
  • Relevant natural resource experience
  • Independent learner and critical thinker
  • Applicant meets the eligibility requirements for the NOHFC Workforce Development Stream
  • Be physically fit and able to work in adverse weather
  • Able to spend multiple days in the field in a variety of conditions
  • Accountability for production, timelines and quality of work

PREFERRED ASSETS


  • Bush-road driving skills considered in asset
  • Mechanical skills
  • Experience working with GIS and related software
  • ATV driving experience

Snapshot of our Services:

• Forest Access Road design and costing using LiDAR, 3D imagery and leading GIS and design software

• Fibre supply planning, sourcing and rate negotiation

• Develop forest access and harvest plans and coordinate their implementation

• Partner with Indigenous organizations in the region to develop community-led natural resource plans and build

capacity by providing forest technician and operator training

• Forest compliance monitoring and inspections (FOIPs)

• Map creation using ArcGIS and QGIS platforms

• Block boundary and road layout

• Environmental assessments (EA): wildlife surveys, erosion sedimentation control, etc.

• Training in the areas of forest operations, forest management, mobile mapping applications


SALARY


  • Base Salary: $61,240.00 per annum
  • Attractive bonus structure
  • Meal per diem for camp work
  • Competitive mileage program for personal truck use


Duration: 1-year Internship with opportunity for continued employment for successful candidate
