Geotechnical Engineer Jobs

New Afton is situated 10 kilometers west of Kamloops, British Columbia, the New Afton Mine is an underground gold and copper producing site.
Kamloops is a city of 90,000 people, located 350 kilometers east of Vancouver. Schedule: Mon - Fri, 8-hour days OR Tues - Fri, 10-hour days
Position Reports To: Senior Mine Geologist
Position Overview
As an integral part of New Afton’s technical services team, the Geotechnical Engineer is responsible for geotechnical planning, creating ground support standards/designs with regards stability, providing support to the mine operations team to create a safe working environment. This role also has potential to be integrated or act as a support role for the surface geotechnical team.
Underground
Key Responsibilities

• Assist with the updating of the life of mine numerical models and assess the feasbility of proposed mine sequence and design;
• Oversee QA/QC of ground support installation and material testing (e.g. shotcrete, grout);
• Identify and communicate potential geotechnical concerns using field mapping, core logs/photo and modelling;
• Assit with mine rehabilitation and recovery activities;
• Coordinate with mutiple departments and contractors to plan and execute geotechnical projects;
• Collect, analyze and report on geotechnical monitoring data;
• Assist with implementaion of underground instrumentation systems and analysis of data;
• Responsible for maintainence, and implementation of the Ground Control Management Plan;
• Provide geotechnical support for the development and construction of new mining levels;
• Complete ground support trials and innovation projects.
• Performing geotechnical analyses and design for excavations, tunnels and underground structures;

Surface Support

• Monitoring, reviewing, and analyzing all subsidence data (instrumentation, flyovers, draw control)
• Performing periodic field assessments
• Design, install and maintain surface geotechnical instrumentation systems;
• Interpret and routinely report the surface subsidence expression and progression by:
• Provide subsidence updates and project support to the Surface & Tailings department;
• Co-ordinate subsidence related activities & tasks with other departments and consultants;
• Making surface geotechnical decisions based on observations and instrumentation data

Qualifications

• Understanding or working knowledge of various ground support systems and applications
• Minimum 5 year geotechnical/rock mechanics experience with knowledge of underground hard rock mining or tunneling
• Proficient in Microsoft Office
• Registered or immediately eligible to register with EGBC as a P.Eng.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or Mine Engineering

Preference Will Be Given To Those Candidates Who Possess

• Experience with 3D geological modelling software eg. Leapfrog
• Exposure and familiarity with the block caving or other mass mining methods
• Experience with numerical modelling analysis and interpretation
• Proficiency with RocScience site of software (Dips, Unwedge, RS2)
• Experience with 3D mining software eg. MineSight, Deswick
• Knowledge of copper-gold porphyry deposits
• Underground mining experience

Other Requirements
Candidates will be required to participate in a comprehensive qualification process, including:

• Provide confirmation of valid educational requirements
• Demonstrate eligibility to work in Canada
• Provide proof of a valid Class 5 driver’s license
• Successful completion of pre-placement functional screen

Compensation
A competitive salary, performance bonus plan and benefits will be provided. This is not a camp operation and therefore the successful candidate will be required to relocate to the Kamloops area or travel and accommodation will be the responsibility of the successful applicant.
