Reporting to the Manager, Community Development, the Food Access Worker is responsible for the operation of food programming within the Rooming House Project. The Food Access Worker will work with peers, volunteers and tenants of the Rooming Houses and food access partners, to reduce barriers to healthy food. The Food Access Worker will facilitate cooking, life skills groups, assist with coordination of peers and volunteers, recruit tenants to programs, skills training and conduct health promotion activities related to food access, food security and healthy eating. The Food Access Worker will work collaboratively with other Housing Support Workers on the team to coordinate programing and activities that suit the food security, harm reduction and social health needs of tenants.


Duties And Responsibilities


Food Preparation/Cooking


  • Develop nutritious menu items appropriate to low-income individuals.
  • Maintain cleanliness of kitchens.
  • Maintain all kitchen equipment.
  • Assist with training and guiding peers, as well as corporate, and agency volunteers in food handling, preparation, and service practices.
  • Work collaboratively with Community Partners to provide access to community support for the food club/food bank as well as facilitating cooking with peers and volunteers for programs and drop in.
  • Ensure safe operation of the kitchens at all times.
  • Prepares and handles food and operates a kitchen safely, in accordance with regulations established by the Toronto Department of Public Health.
  • Purchase and order supplies, as required.
  • Prepare, plan nutritious meals that educate volunteers on budgeting, health, and life skills.
  • Maintain safe storage of all food items.


Food Programming/Education


  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with local community agencies and existing partnerships.
  • Participate in external partnerships and on internal committees that benefit the community of rooming house tenants and the broader community as required.
  • Develop and coordinate weekly drop in events and food bank planning in consultation with Management and other staff that deliver rich harm reduction and social wellbeing programs to build healthier communities and improve well-being of individuals.


Organizational Accountabilities


  • Maintain up to date documentation, progress reports, volunteer hours tracking and reporting as needed.
  • Participate in case conferences, weekly team meetings, monthly volunteer meetings
  • Ensure monitoring and data collection of community programs.


Qualifications


  • Must have up-to-date vaccinations for COVID-19 with a vaccine that has been approved for use in Canada.
  • Food Handler certification (required).
  • Emergency First Aid & CPR certification an asset.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Relevant post-secondary degree or certificate or equivalent work experience in the field Harm Reduction/Mental Health Support, social service work and or Food Security work.
  • Community Development experience.
  • Self-directed and independent; ability to work effectively as an inter-disciplinary team and in collaboration with other community professionals.
  • Demonstrate application of harm reduction principles and strategies and excellent knowledge of the challenges faced by people living in poverty
  • Crisis Prevention and Intervention training/certification an asset.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment, flexibility, creativity, and sensitivity to changing client situations and needs.
  • Demonstrated ability in food handling and planning meals.
  • Able to provide a Vulnerable Sector Screening check with a 'Clear' or satisfactory result that meets the Agency's operational requirements.
  • Two years related experience, in a drop in setting, with experience of serving clients who have substance use issues, mental health and have history of homelessness.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of community agencies and their relevant programs and services.
  • Must be legally able to work in Canada.
