Job Description

MATRIX is looking for an experienced First Cook with an OFA3 certificate. You are team oriented, motivated, and have an acute eye for detail, accuracy, and excellent skill with prioritizing tasks. You will play a key role at one of our remote exploration camps by performing or coordinating all catering both independently and within a team setting.
This position will be primarily at our new camp west of Dease Lake, BC, and will also potentially operate at our Bronson Camp north of Stewart, BC. This position reports to the Camp Manager. Start date for this position will be June 08, 2023.
Responsibilities:
  • Ensure the “first in first out” rotation procedures to support food inventory control.
  • Liaise with grocers for quality, quantity and back orders.
  • Prepare baked goods and desserts from scratch.
  • Ensure kitchen staff performs tasks according to safe work practices and safe job procedures.
  • Implement and execute a Food Safety Plan using advanced HACCP recording methods.
  • Order, received, and properly store grocery orders.
  • Execute safe food storage and labeling of potential food allergy items.
  • Develop menus that reflect site preferences and dietary restrictions.
  • Participate in daily toolbox meetings.
  • Provide facility orientation to incoming kitchen staff.
  • Ensure good housekeeping in the work area at all times.
  • Conduct monthly worksite and kitchen facility inspections to ensure health and safety of workspace.
  • Report any unsafe conditions and/or equipment to Camp Manager.
  • Maintain sufficient food inventory for site resident numbers.
  • Prepare service for three (3) daily meals; Buffet Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.
  • Provide coaching and training to kitchen staff.
  • Maintain a well-organized and clean food storage area.
  • Maintain a high performing, team orientated and productive work environment.
  • Report all incidents and accidents immediately.
Required Knowledge & Experience
  • Conflict resolution skills.
  • Able to maintain a high level of performance over a 10 – 12 hour shift.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Physical ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work a rotation schedule.
  • Management, organizational and problem-solving abilities.
  • Minimum of three (3) years working in a remote camp as a First Cook.
  • Highly motivated, team-oriented individual with attention to detail.
  • Excellent First Aid/Emergency Responder knowledge and experience.
  • Able to lift and move heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods of time and perform physical labor.
  • Proficient computer skills.
Preferred Licensing & Certifications:
  • Previous experience working in a remote camp setting.
  • Food Safe Handling Certificate and WHMIS Certificate.
  • Culinary Diploma and/or Red Seal Designation preferred
  • OFA3 or EMR - Must be a current certification.
Please note that references and a criminal record check is mandatory for this position.
This position works on a 4 week in / 2 week out rotation (Fully Remote). Preference will be given to Stewart, BC residents and areas in proximity to the local communities of these camps.
