First Cook/Ofa3 (Fly In- Fly Out Remote Camps)

MATRIX is looking for an experienced First Cook with an OFA3 certificate (equivalent to Advanced First Aid in Alberta and Ontario). You are team oriented, motivated, and have an acute eye for detail, accuracy, and excellent skill with prioritizing tasks. You will play a key role at one of our remote exploration camps by performing or coordinating all catering both independently and within a team setting.

This position is for one of our camps in the Northwest Territory - Start date for this position is August 17th 2023. In this position you will report to the Camp Manager. Other positions at other camps may also become available over the season.

You must possess your OFA3 First Aid certification (or equivalent - EMR, Advanced First Aid, Marine Advanced First Aid etc.) to be considered for this position. Level 1 or Emergency first aid does not qualify (1-2 day course). The OFA3 course (or advanced first aid course) is a 2 week, 80 hour course.

Responsibilities:

• Conduct monthly worksite and kitchen facility inspections to ensure health and safety of workspace
• Participate in daily toolbox meetings
• Ensure good housekeeping in the work area at all times
• Ensure the “first in first out” rotation procedures to support food inventory control
• Prepare baked goods and desserts from scratch
• Report any unsafe conditions and/or equipment to Camp Manager.
• Liaise with grocers for quality, quantity and back orders
• Implement and execute a Food Safety Plan using advanced HACCP recording methods
• Maintain a well-organized and clean food storage area
• Execute safe food storage and labeling of potential food allergy items
• Report all incidents and accidents immediately
• Maintain a high performing, team orientated and productive work environment
• Maintain sufficient food inventory for site resident numbers.
• Prepare service for three (3) daily meals; Buffet Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
• Ensure kitchen staff performs tasks according to safe work practices and safe job procedures
• Order, received, and properly store grocery orders.
• Provide coaching and training to kitchen staff.
• Develop menus that reflect site preferences and dietary restrictions.
• Provide facility orientation to incoming kitchen staff.

Required Knowledge & Experience

• Ability to work a rotation schedule
• Management, organizational and problem-solving abilities
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Physical ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs
• Excellent First Aid/Emergency Responder knowledge and experience.
• Conflict resolution skills
• Proficient computer skills
• Able to lift and move heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods of time and perform physical labor
• Minimum of three (3) years working in a remote camp as a First Cook
• Highly motivated, team-oriented individual with attention to detail
• OFA3 or EMR - This is required to be considered for the position, and Must be a current certification. Advanced First Aid (10 day course) is also acceptable
• Able to maintain a high level of performance over a 10 – 12 hour shift

Preferred Licensing & Certifications:

• Food Safe Handling Certificate and WHMIS Certificate
• Previous experience working in a remote camp setting
• Culinary Diploma and/or Red Seal Designation preferred

This position works on a 3 week in / 3 week out rotation (Fully Remote). Preference will be given to local residents and areas in proximity to the local communities of these camps.
