Job Description

Overview:


Our client is a US based developer of custom built modular process units used at industrial facilities world wide. Due to continued growth, they require the services of an experienced Engineering Manager to work with our Client's internal engineering and partner EPC's in Calgary, AB to provide leadership for the Modules team.

The Modules Engineering Manager will be responsible for all technical disciplines related to our Client's modules development and execution.

The Modules Engineering Manager will build and manage diverse teams of engineers from different disciplines, formulate and execute strategies, and coordinate with other managers ensuring projects and engineering duties are fulfilled.



Responsibilities:



  • Responsible for managing the engineering team who ensure that all Module projects delivered are technically fit for purpose and meet the statutory requirements.
  • Ensures the technical part of the Contract review is conducted with rigour. Evaluates product design, customer performance requirements and standards. Manages the development of project specifications and design documents as necessary to execute the project. Develops cost estimates, performance standards and execution plan as required by the project team.
  • Ensures that the engineering team properly interfaces with other project members on issues and works jointly with the project team to quickly mitigate any issues effecting the technical content or performance of the project.
  • Ensures the project equipment list and other key documents are issued and maintained for each project.
  • Provide technical support to the cost controller to allow the generation of estimates at project commencement and for any potential scope change.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining a Modules Technical organization that includes all relevant disciplines, in support of quotes and active projects
  • Ensures effective technical coordination with end Client's representatives and as such participates to maintain good communication channels with end Client.
  • Participates to project planning definition by providing engineering milestones and requirements
  • Ensure instructions to the engineering team and other project team members are conducted through proper project engineering instructions and procedures.
  • Approves the qualification of all engineering personnel assigned to projects. Develops and approves all manpower and staffing plans in anticipation of projects and assures availability during execution.
  • Work with the project manager to ensure the appropriate contract is in place for any for any 3rd party contractors. This will typically be NEC forms of contract for professional and third part services.
  • Ensures the necessary technical decisions are made in a timely manner to resolve any conflicts between or within disciplines.
  • Ensures the engineering project team is fully aware of all contract/project requirements and conversely assures that all project team members are aware of all technical issues, limitations, or requirements important to the procurement and safe construction of the modules.
  • Ensure that the technical team and any 3rd party technical contractors adhere to the overall project quality plan provided by the capital projects manager throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Identify the technical deliverables, based on the scope agreed by the Project Manager, and use these as a basis to assist in the provision the project estimates and project execution plan.
  • Defines the engineering organization charts, staffing and personnel roles with engineering discipline departments. Hire, train, and mentor other engineers and supporting staff.
  • Responsible for reinforcing and setting the standard for our Client's core values.
  • Implements a culture of continuous Product and Process Improvements within the Engineering Department.
  • Work with the project planner to agree technical team resource requirements and milestones and to monitor progress against them.
  • Identify and implement effective training and development plans for Engineers and Designers within the Engineering Department.
  • Responsible for providing and ensuring ongoing continuous employee training is an integral part of Modules Engineering.
  • Facilitate the generation of the technical project risk register, (including 3rd part risk registers) and its ongoing management. Ensure the risk register is agreed and regularly reviewed with the project manager and appropriate mitigation measures implemented.
  • Identifies and qualifies third party engineering service companies or consultants to provide proposals and detail designs for various scopes of our Client's Module projects.
  • Ensures that engineering activity is compliant with project milestones and in accordance with baseline plan. Alerts project management in case of unforeseen variation and suggests if needed mitigation measures
  • Provides interdepartmental training as required.
  • Ensures effective interdisciplinary coordination through regularly scheduled meetings.
  • Engineering point of Contact for all Modules QA Audits.
  • Provide technical direction and support to supply chain staff for the negotiation of and qualification of any purchased good or services required for the delivery of the project.
  • Responsible for ensuring that all technical scope change is agreed with the project manager prior to implementation through the life of the project.
  • Works with Production Engineering, Technology and R&D to provide design feature feedback and properly incorporate new products into Modules designs.
  • Responsible for providing the technical support to the project manager to ensure that the project will deliver the required benefits and is fit for purpose.
  • To provide input to project governance reviews.


Management Responsibilities:


  • Supervises all disciplines employees and contractors that support technical activities related to Modules. This may include independent consultants and contract engineering companies.
  • Ensures effective supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies, procedures and applicable laws.


Education and Experience:


  • A postgraduate qualification in a relevant area of expertise (e.g., Business Administration, Project Management) would be advantageous.
  • BSc. degree in an Engineering discipline, P.Eng. status.
  • Previous experience in the engineering section of a construction company would be advantageous but not essential.
  • Capable of supervisory capacity for planning, organizing, communicating and personnel management skills.
  • Minimum 12 years’ experience relevant professional experience and a strong track record in the management of detailed engineering activities for O&G/Petrochemical construction projects

  • The position may require travel to contractors, construction sites and installation locations anywhere in the world. May require extended stays of up to several weeks during the construction and installation phases of a project.
