The Engineering Manager is responsible for leading the Engineering group and providing expert advice, guidance, and recommendations of a technical nature. The engineering manager will provide oversite to all engineering-related projects. He/She will contribute to the distribution bid proposals, estimates and material calculations and is accountable for the accuracy of quoted work. The Engineering Manager will propose and implement solutions in line with company objectives.
Responsibilities
Engineering Management
  • Monitor the review and approval of weekly timesheets to confirm scheduling commitments.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers to complete technical reviews, monitor project schedules, ensure completion of deliverables, and to prepare estimates and justifications for change orders if necessary.
  • Responsible for coordinating the assignment of resources to projects and rationalizing workload among salary, hourly, and consultant & contractor staff to optimize company financial performance.
  • Responsible for the application of the company’s Organizational Quality Management Program (OQM), and for ensuring that all company deliverables are complete, accurate, and comply with all applicable codes, standards, specifications, and safety requirements.
  • Collaborate with Principals, Business Unit managers, Business Development, and Project Managers to prepare fee estimates for all Sacre-Davey proposals.
  • Constantly challenge your team to develop solutions that meet or exceed quality standards and client expectations, demonstrate process and technology improvements, or reduce costs by new approaches, creative solutions, or improving implementation and delivery
Workforce Planning & Development
  • Leverage the regional offices of the Sacre-Davey Group to optimize recruitment from a broader candidate pool including Calgary, Toronto, Montreal, and Seattle, and by developing systems and methods for remote work and collaboration.
  • Define job classifications, proficiency requirements, and professional growth strategies for ongoing development of technical personnel, and to determine career pathways within the organization.
  • In collaboration with Principals, Business Unit managers, and Business Development, determine the priority service offerings of the business, then align the core competencies and resident skillsets of the engineering workforce with those priorities.
  • Optimize the engineering organization whether by discipline, industry experience, and centers of excellence for key engineering applications to optimize performance and efficiency.
  • Lead the application and use of the company performance management system to evaluate the performance of the engineering workforce, recognize achievement, improve deficiencies, promote talent, and top-grading when necessary to achieve desired company values and culture.
  • In collaboration with Human Resources, coordinate the recruitment, candidate evaluation, and perform the final assessment for selection of all engineering and consulting personnel.
Engineering Tools & Systems
  • Collaborate with Principals and Business Unit managers to determine the systems, methods, tools, and internal processes necessary to compete for and win strategic clients and projects to enable the next stage of company growth and development.
  • Responsible for review, approval, training, and effective use of all software tools
  • Responsible for defining a small number of meaningful key performance indicators for the engineering organization and establishing efficient routine management reports to communicate the organization’s status and development.
  • Responsible for establishing and maintaining reference libraries for design codes and standards.
  • Responsible for assessing the need for and development of internal engineering standards, and their subsequent review and final approval, including but not limited to procedures, network file structures, templates, and data sheets.

Other duties and responsibilities
  • Collaborate with Principals, Business Unit managers, and Business Development to identify leads for new business, conduct initial meetings, follow-up, and assist with preparing and submitting proposals.
  • Perform site visits from time to time to ensure organizational performance, build client relationships, and identify new project opportunities for new business development.
  • Additional responsibilities and special projects when necessary.
  • Field engineering including on-site design, field reviews, and technical support.

Qualifications
  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering
  • Capacity to resolve complex issues in a timely manner.
  • Strong coaching and professional development skills required to build capacity within a growing team.
  • Minimum of 15 years of relevant job experience
  • Ability to manager around tight deadlines
  • Foster an environment of continuous improvement within the team.
  • Expert mentorship and leadership skills.
  • Ability to build relationships with clients, consultants, approval authorities and other representatives.
  • Registered or eligible to register as a Professional Engineer with EGBC and other provincial bodies. Registration, or ability to register, in the US is an asset.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
