Engineer Or Eit, Operations Planning

The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. We provide open and non-discriminatory access to Alberta’s interconnected power grid and also facilitate Alberta’s competitive wholesale electricity market. Reporting to the Manager, Operations Planning, we are looking for a full-time Engineer or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) to join our Grid Reliability team. You will manage system reliability risks by identifying system risks from event analysis, conduct operations planning studies and evaluations of Alberta transmission systems in it’s existing form, and create mitigation measures such as System Controller Procedures and Remediate Action Schemes. You will work closely with our planning teams to communicate your findings and formulate longer term solutions. Additionally, you will perform event analysis to identify emerging system reliability risks. Support to other operations teams may be required from time to time such as Operations Co-ordination or Operations Engineering.

Accountabilities include but are not limited to:

• Analyse system events to identify and qualify emerging risks.
• Provide and co-ordinate technical support for other operations teams and departments.
• Provide recommendations for regional operational plans with follow up on system control procedures, RAS, etc. and implement such recommendations.
• Participate in industry organization committees (e.g. WECC) as required.
• Prepare operational plans including thermal loading, voltage & transient stability assessment and design of mitigation measures.

What you’ll bring to us:

• Experience in integrated utility planning is considered a definite asset.
• B.Sc. Electrical Engineering with advanced/additional qualifications considered advantageous.
• Registered with or eligible to be reqistered with APEGA (P.Eng.).
• 2 to 5 years experience in high voltage power systems operation, planning or analysis.
• Experience with PSS/E or other transmission system planning tools.
