Job Description


JOB TITLE: EMERGENCY VEHICLE TECHNICIAN - Probationary


DEPARTMENT: FIRE & EMERGENCY SERVICES


POSTING NUMBER: 105478


NUMBER OF POSITIONS: 1


JOB STATUS & DURATION: Full Time Permanent


HOURS OF WORK: 40 hour workweek, shift work and variable hours


LOCATION: You will report to the location of the Apparatus and Maintenance Building.


SALARY GRADE: 9


STARTING SALARY: $86,326.00 per year


JOB TYPE: Union

Area Of Responsibility


Reporting to the Division Chief of Apparatus and Maintenance, this position will be responsible for:


  • Maintain an awareness and understanding of current and emerging technologies; and
  • Read and understand electrical, hydraulic and air brake schematics;
  • Perform other similar and related duties as assigned.
  • Efficiently complete all necessary work orders;
  • The repair, maintenance, testing and inspection of the Fire Department fleet, equipment, buildings and property;
  • Adherence to documented department procedures;
  • Troubleshooting and accurately diagnosing problems;


Selection Criteria


EDUCATION:


  • Current truck and coach technician’s licence (310T);
  • Current automotive service technician’s licence (310S);
  • Grade 12 education or equivalent secondary school education as established by the Ontario Ministry of Education;


Required Experience


  • 5 years experience diagnosing and repairing problems on heavy vehicles and equipment;
  • 5 years experience diagnosing and repairing problems on air and hydraulic systems;


Other Skills And Assets


  • Demonstrated organizational skills;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite;
  • Must possess and maintain a valid, class “D” Ontario Driver’s License with “Z” endorsement;
  • Must be able to lift and stand for extended periods of time;
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills;
  • Demonstrated customer service skills including ability to provide technical guidance;
  • Must be willing and able to wear all required uniform clothing and/or protective equipment as assigned/ required.
  • Demonstrated communications skills, both written and verbal;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and within a team environment;


Preferred Qualifications


  • Knowledge of hydraulic pumps/systems is an asset;
  • Experience with emergency vehicles, apparatus and equipment is an asset;
  • Various tests and/or exams may be administered as part of the selection criteria.
  • Knowledge of Scott Breathing Apparatus and medical oxygen equipment is an asset;
  • Knowledge and ability to perform SCBA functional testing, maintenance, repair and related fit testing is an asset;
  • Welding and fabricating skills in aluminum and steel is an asset.
