About the Opportunity
We’re searching for an experienced Director of Finance to join our team in Calgary, AB. This is a unique and exciting opportunity to not only oversee the financial operations of two established commissions but also play a crucial role in the creation of a new commission.
Your essential responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Acting as an administrator supporting the Finance and Audit committee and overseeing all matters delegated to Management in connection with investment activities, liaising with fund managers and advisors.
- Identifying opportunities for improving efficiencies and effectiveness as well as reducing costs.
- Developing and maintaining internal controls for financial reporting
- Establishing a regular performance-to-budget report, preparing regular financial forecasts, and coordinating the preparation of the operating and capital budgets
- Reviewing and negotiating benefit premiums
- Providing direction and control in accurately recording and maintaining records in compliance with GAAP
- Maintaining consistency of procedures, control, and standards, as well as developing, implementing, and ensuring compliance with financial policies and procedures
- Managing a 3 person accounting team
- Preparing financial statements in accordance with GAAP and managing external audit requirements
- Reporting regular financial information to management, the Finance and Audit Committee, as well as the Board of Directors
- Ensuring timely collection of receivables, payment of invoices, and compliance with tax authorities
About You
To qualify, you must have a post-secondary degree (or equivalent experience) in accounting or finance, as well as, a minimum of 10 years of accounting and finance experience, with evidence of increasing responsibility and 5 years of experience working in an executive leadership role. A valid driver's license is also required for this role.
The following will be critical to successfully performing this role:
- Experience with GST filings and proficiency in risk management from a financial perspective.
- Demonstrated experience working alongside audit committees and Board Chairs, providing financial expertise and guidance
- Possess a Chartered Professional Accounting Designation (CPA, CA, CMA, CGA)
- Familiarity with non-profit financial structures and reporting, including preparation for audits and regulatory compliance
Preferred Requirements
- Embrace change management initiatives, actively seeking ways to improve processes and adapt to new technologies
- Proactive, self-starter with an entrepreneurial approach to identifying opportunities for efficiency and effectiveness
- Previous experience working with industry associations, demonstrating knowledge of program management and stakeholder engagement (asset)
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, enabling data-driven decision-making and strategic financial planning
- Personal or professional background in agriculture
- Willingness to act as a coach and mentor, fostering professional growth and development throughout the organization
