Position Summary


Are you interested in supporting the research data management (RDM) services and practices in Canada, and contributing to a pan-Canadian initiative that is dedicated to the shared stewardship of research data? Want to have a real impact on the academic research community and beyond?


University of Alberta Library (UAL) is seeking to hire a Data Management Planning (DM P) Specialist to support the ongoing development and delivery of DMP resources provided through the Digital Research Alliance of Canada. The Alliance provides national-level RDM support alongside advanced research computing (ARC), research software (RS), and cybersecurity (CS). The Alliance RDM team, situated in the Operations and Security Department, collaborates and partners with stakeholders from across the Canadian research ecosystem to develop and coordinate expertise, platforms, services, technology, and training in support of RDM, including DMP Assistant, with the goal of facilitating adoption of data stewardship best practices by researchers and institutions. Hosted by University of Alberta Library (UAL), DMP Assistant is a freely available tool that assists researchers in preparing detailed high quality data management plans (DMPs) both to support their research and meet institution and funder requirements, including those set forth by the Canadian Tri-Agency Research Data Management Policy.


We are looking for a committed and knowledgeable DMP Specialist. As a member of UAL’s research data management portfolio, you will design, develop and implement solutions that support UAL, UA researchers, and the Alliance’s commitment to RDM and DMP best practices. You will be working on projects that focus on user experience, accessibility, sustainability, iterative development, and enhancing the RDM ecosystem. You will be collaborating with working groups and committees, including the Alliance’s Data Management Planning Expert Group (DMPEG), on development and delivery of DMP resources. The Incumbent(s) will have the opportunity and expectation to be an active member of those communities.


Responsibilities


  • Assists with the development and delivery of DMP resources and supports, including training materials, DMP templates, exemplar DMPs, and administrative guides
  • Regularly attend and provide support to the DMP Assistant Administrators Community of Practice Advisory Group meetings
  • Provide both end-user and administrative support for the DMP Assistant as needed
  • Attend and support DMP Assistant Service Team meetings as needed
  • Assists with the delivery of DMP focused engagement and learning opportunities , including information sessions, webinars, and workshops
  • Work with the DMP Product Lead to support as needed the DMP Assistant Steering Committee and its key activities
  • Assists with the delivery of the University of Alberta Library DMP related services, including with local administration of DMP Assistant
  • Support an evolving DMP Assistant service mode l, including with respect to the maintenance and development of DMP templates and their associated guidance
  • Works closely with the DMP Expert Group (DMPEG), its co-chairs, and the Alliance DMP Product Lead in supporting a range of DMP related activities
  • Assist with Alliance and Tri-Agencies collaborative activities in support of the Tri-Agency RDM Policy requirements


Required Qualifications & Experience


  • Understanding of and experience applying RDM best practices including those relating to FAIR principles as well as with respect to Indigenous Data Sovereignty (CARE; OCAP)
  • Familiarity with the DMP Assistant tool and its functionality and key features
  • Familiarity with research data management (RDM) and the research lifecycle - applied research experience considered an asset
  • Familiarity and experience working with tools common in virtual work, including Zoom, Slack, and the full suite of Google products (e.g., Google Drive, Documents, Slides, Meet, Sheets)
  • Familiarity and experience with project management strategies and best practices
  • Understanding of DMPs, including their importance, purpose, and role in supporting research excellence
  • Familiarity with the Canadian research landscape, including the Tri-Agency Research Data Management Policy and evolving DMP requirements
  • Graduate degree and experience working in academic and research settings


Preferred Qualifications


  • Professional experience in an academic, special, or research library, or equivalent relevant experience, is highly desirable
  • Proficiency in French (reading/writing) is highly desirable
  • Experience with the development and implementation of data management plans and/or data governance in a research setting
