Job Description

Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. We are also building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto’s subway system, to get people where they need to go, better, faster and easier. Metrolinx is an agency of the Government of Ontario.

Our Signals & Communications Office is looking for a Data Analyst to provide expertise in and coordinate the development of data management strategies and data collection systems for Customer Service/Safety and Security Division. You will identify and analyze data trends/issues and make recommendations for improvement to business, operations and system processes.
What will I be doing?
  • Responsible for the extraction of data from primary and secondary sources and supports the reporting and analytics of asset class and system performance to meet levels of service and Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety (RAMS) targets throughout the asset lifecycle.
  • Identify, analyses, and interpret trends or patterns in complex data sets using programming platforms for data gathering and analysis activities; produce ongoing and ad hoc reports and dashboards that identify issues, provide insight into results and outline recommendations for process improvements to resolve operational, business and system issues.
  • Imports, cleans, transforms, validates, and models data to improve data quality and ensure data is accurate and fosters understanding of operational, business and system issues/trends while advising on data issues which includes quality, availability, and usability.
  • Work with team members in other transit and enforcement agencies to gather and share information on data management and collection strategies, operational, business together with system issues and best practices.
  • Develop data management strategies and data collection systems including the design of relational databases for information management and retrieval that improve statistical efficiency, data quality and supports evidence-based decision-making.
  • Build forecasting models for utility expenditure and asset performance.
  • Present data in dashboards, charts, graphs, and tables by building online applications such as data input/data collection screens to capture and present meaningful information for reporting, analysis, and presentation purposes for use by management, internal departments and partners in implementing process improvements.
  • Supports and implements data strategies for data modeling and analysis and the development of RAMS input data requirements for key performance metrics to assess and provide data on failure rates of the system, potential failure modes, maintenance operations, and identify hazards and their consequences for the asset class infrastructure.
What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?
  • Minimum two (2) years' experience in a Data Analyst or similar role, with a background in technology, information management, relational database design, business intelligence, data mining or statistics.
  • Knowledge of data visualization software like Tableau, PowerBI, or equivalent platforms, and familiar with data visualizations such as Pareto charts, Histograms, and Treemap charts.
  • Verbal and written skills to prepare reports, update, and brief management; provide information and technical explanations to a range of company partners
  • Knowledge of relational database concepts, database management software and tools and computer applications including MS Office Excel (Pivot tables, Power Pivot, formulas, VBA) and SQL queries.
  • University degree in Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science, Information Management, Statistics, Engineering or a related discipline, or a combination of education, training and experience deemed equivalent.
  • Experience in identify trends in data and provide insight into results and outline recommendations.
