Department Summary


Residence Life at the University of Alberta is a leading program in Canada, dedicated to the principles of dignity, respect, safety, equity, learning, and community. Reporting to the Supervisor, Residence Life - Community Support, the Coordinator - Residence Care assists in achieving the goals of the University of Alberta. This is accomplished through the provision of caring, student-focused, residential environments, which assist students in being academically successful, teach students how to live respectfully with diverse groups of people, provide many leadership opportunities, and build a sense of community responsibility.


Position Summary


The Coordinator - Residence Care is key in fostering residential learning environments that are specific to the diverse needs of the community and include the following: the provision of wellness programs and support services to help students succeed both academically and personally; the provision of on-on-one support to students needing enhanced care in order to connect them to professional services on campus and in the greater community; the provision of direct coaching to student staff as they work to support students who need enhanced care, the ongoing training and support of student staff on mental health, wellness and health support practices, and resolving student issues so that both personal and residence concerns are addressed, thus supporting the academic pursuit of residents. This position will focus on delivering reactive support to the residence community and will support a paraprofessional intern who will focus on proactive programming and education.


Residence Services recognizes there are many dimensions to student wellness such as: emotional / mental health, environmental, financial, intellectual, occupational, physical, social and spiritual. This position will aim to provide support and education for all of these dimensions.


This position does have the option to rent a semi-furnished staff apartment on-campus if units are available.


Duties


  • Creates and maintains best practices in residence for student support such as safety plans templates, students of concern documentation processes, resource guides, etc...
  • Remains knowledgeable of University policies, procedures, and resources in order to assist students and guide them to appropriate resources (e.g. Office of the Dean of Students, filing reports with University of Alberta Protective Services, the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Policy, the Employee and Family Assistance Program, etc...).
  • Coordinates the development and delivery of programs that foster student growth with respect to wellness, social/community, and personal capacities, to help them transition through and out of the university experience.
  • Meeting with students on a one-on-one basis to provide support and to get them connected with campus and community resources. This role does not provide on-going, long-term one-on-one support or counselling to students
  • Selects, supervises, trains, and supports the designated paraprofessional intern within the Community Support Team on wellness programming and initiatives in residence.. This component is critical given the entry level nature of the student staff paraprofessional role and the guidance required.
  • When determined as appropriate by the Manager, Residence Life and Education (MRLE), attend Dean of Students Student of Concern and or/Protocol 91 meetings
  • Ensuring everything is documented appropriately in Advocate and shared with Helping Individuals At Risk (HIAR) team and the Office of the Dean of Students (DoS) as needed
  • With oversight from the Supervisor, Residence Life - Community Support, oversee the management of the day-to-day support for students of concern. This includes:
  • Provides direct, ongoing coaching to student staff as they work to support students who need enhanced care (i.e. providing resource options, tips for conversations, etc…)
  • Work closely with the MRLE and the Supervisor, Residence LIfe - Community Support to implement follow-up from HIAR Case Team Meetings and Student of Concern meetings
  • Coordinates with other Departments and University staff concerning projects and student wellness issues in both the residence community and for the residence system at large
  • Work closely with Student Care Coordinators in the DoS to transition over appropriate files


Minimum Qualifications


  • At least two years living and/or working in a university residence (ideally, one as a resident and one as a student staff member), in order to relate to and advise students is required.
  • Able to work in the after-hours emergency standby rotation and perform callback duties as required.
  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Education, Counseling, Social Work or a related field; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered
  • Able to respond to emergency and crisis situations (described above) during and outside of office hours as required.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Ability to work with confidential information in a professional and sensitive manner
  • Certifications in suicide intervention, health & safety, first aid training, and dispute resolution would be considered an asset
  • Significant intercultural competence (experience abroad, fluency in additional languages, relevant education or work experience) is preferred
  • Experience working in multicultural environments and previous supervisory experience are assets
  • Strong communication skills (both verbal and written)
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written), interpersonal, organizational and problem solving skills
  • Fluency in the French language would be considered an asset
  • Experience in supporting diverse communities and populations
  • Strong interpersonal and empathic skills, with ability to establish trusting relationships with staff members and students
  • Experience in community engagement and community building activities
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License (non-GDL) with the ability to drive University Fleet vehicles is an asset
  • Computer proficiency using MS Office applications (Word, Outlook and Excel) and proficiency using Google Suite of software
  • Previous professional experience in student affairs, student services and/or a higher education environment will be considered an asset
