Working for the Department/Faculty


The Steel Centre is an education and research centre housed in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The Steel Centre seeks to imagine and transform the future of steel construction through innovative training and learning opportunities for future engineers, top-quality research, and close partnership with industry.


Position


The Student Experience Coordinator (SEC) is responsible for developing and maintaining meaningful and engaging student-focused experiential learning programs based on strong relationships with the Steel Centre’s industry partners. It is important to ensure a high level of contact between industry and students to provide relevant learning experiences to a range of structural engineering students, from the undergraduate to post-doctoral levels. This role requires the proactive development, deployment, and management of student-centered programs, as well as the design of both internal- and external-facing communications such as the Steel Centre’s website, reports, and correspondence. The SEC is also responsible for drafting, editing, and coordinating proposals and providing support to researchers involved in interdisciplinary Steel Centre projects. This role requires excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders.


Duties


  • Develops and organizes proposals, presentations, and research plan outlines, including proofreading and editing
  • Guides the development of the branding, identity, and marketing of the Steel Centre, including social media presence using platforms such as LinkedIn
  • Identifies external opportunities and manages communications with industry to arrange construction site, fabrication shop, consultancy, and other relevant visits or job shadowing opportunities
  • Communicates and cultivates relationships with external stakeholders (industry partners, government agencies, etc.) as well as internal stakeholders (students, research collaborators, Research Services Office personnel, etc.)
  • Develops, deploys, and manages the Steel Centre’s student-focused suite of special programs: Steel Squad, SCORE, Steel for Lunch, SCILS, SuperTours , and potential future programs
  • Creates and maintains Steel Centre operations files, including financial, research grant, and student records


Minimum Qualifications


  • Public relations, education, or event planning training, or at least four years of demonstrated experience and success in a similar position
  • 4-year degree in education, communications, business, or equivalent work experience
  • Strong interpersonal and creative skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Apps
  • Ability to manage time, priorities, and schedules


Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience in website content management
  • Background knowledge of the research framework within the University environment
  • General knowledge about the construction industry
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign)
