HIRING SALARY RANGE: $84,403.00 - $94,954.00 per annum


MAXIMUM OF SALARY RANGE: $105,504.00 per annum

Area Of Responsibility


Reporting to the Supervisor, Forestry Planning, this role has the responsibility of overseeing day to day operations of contracted services for the City of Brampton Forestry section. This includes but not limited to tree maintenance crews, stump removal and tree planting. The successful applicant will also provide support and contribute to strategies and initiation of the Urban Forest Management Plan (UFMP).


Key Duties And Responsibilities


Provide daily staff supervision, to a team of unionized and non-union or seasonal staff in the Forestry section. Instruct, supervise and monitor forestry contractors. Is readily available to answer staff questions, provide on-the-job training and clear instructions. Accountable for scheduling and coordination of staff activities to ensure efficient operation while meeting standards and in full compliance of regulations. Participate in union/management meetings when required. Develop and oversee staff training for procedures or equipment specific to the Forestry trade. (eg. Climbing, chainsaws, chippers, and aerial lift devices). Monitor staff performance and participate in staff discipline and conduct investigations as needed


Schedule and oversee work. Determine the work schedule to ensure the most efficient use of staff, equipment and materials. Review and monitor standard operating procedures and recommend changes. Review specs for new equipment and provide recommendations. Provide subject matter expertise to staff and contractors to best protect the interests of the corporation and the trees in question as required.


Administrative work Support and implement the UFMP. Coordinate the planning, administering and maintaining of all operational materials and contracts, including preparation of tenders to ensure operational needs are met. Prepare reports on current crew status, GPS reports, various concerns, budget items, long and short term goals and other departmental tasks as they arise i.e; co-ordinate warranty work for trees that need to be replaced which are still under warranty and limit downtime to ensure that work is scheduled for both employees and the contracts. Manage the procurement of contracts for equipment, services and materials and monitor vendor performance and authorize payment. Conduct and maintain an inventory of City-owned trees and potential tree planting sites as well as high-priority trees on private lands. Monitor and report on the progress towards urban forest targets and undertake tree performance trials to diversify the urban forest and identify climate-ready trees. Meet with contractors on a regular basis.


Engage/contractors. Provide direction and supervision to contractors performing any tree related maintenance. Inspect and grant or deny acceptance of all plant material installed by private contractors. This would entail the preparation and enforcement of contract specifications, approval of payment and conducting the vendor performance analysis.. Work with vendors to ensure to adequate equipment inventory, and to establish various work contracts while adhering to all City and legislative policies. Meet with contractors to review performance and conduct quality assurance on completed work, resolve discrepancies in performance, billing or other related concerns.


Public service. Respond to all public and internal inquiries regarding trees, forestry services and provide a response or initiate follow-up action as required.


Education


SELECTION CRITERIA:


  • University degree or Community College Diploma in, Arboriculture, Forestry or related program;


Required Experience


  • Minimum (5) years experience in Urban Forestry field along with (3)years experience supervising unionized and contracted staff;


Other Skills And Assets


  • Landscape pesticide license preferred:
  • Solid computer literacy with knowledge of MS Office especially INFOR/CITY WORKS and extensive knowledge of spreadsheet applications
  • Safety & Awareness for Line Clearing Certificate (IHSA)
  • Knowledgeable of Occupational Health & Safety Act, Highway Traffic Act, Employment Standards Act and other applicable legislation and standards
  • Willing to work shifts and be on 24 hour call duty when required
  • TRAQ certification
  • Various tests and/or exams may be administered as part of the selection criteria.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively deal with the public.
  • Ability to schedule work and meet deadlines
  • ISA certification
