Co-Op Management Consultant Jobs

Company

Nīewe Consulting Ltd. (formerly Baiame Consulting)

Address Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

Salary

Job Description

Nīewe Consulting is a different kind of firm … and we are a different kind of people who want a different work experience than those offered by traditional consulting firms. Nīewe (rhymes with view) – formally known as a Baiame Consulting – is a start-up … and we are growing fast! We are a young firm – and even those of us who are a little long in the tooth are young at heart.

Our leaders have been with the big firms, and we are doing our best to create something different … Together, we asked the question of what a truly different company would look like. We found that we could apply a “kitchen table” approach whereby the team gathers together collaboratively when needed but isn’t bound by work location or hours. We have created an environment that encourages staff to work when they are the most productive so that they can best serve their clients. And on top of that, we were able to empower employees to direct both the company and their own careers so that clients always receive informed, innovative and continuously improving advice.

So, Nīewe Consulting — if it wasn’t already obvious — is a management consulting firm. We deliver similar services (Financial Management, Governance, Risk & Oversight, Strategy & Operations and Business Transformation) to the big boys but are far more agile and as a result, more innovative/pragmatic for our clients. Our teams are small and our senior level consultants, including the partners, actually spend a significant amount of their time doing client delivery – so clients get much better value. Our junior consultants get more responsibility (and significantly more interaction with the firm leaders and clients) than they would in larger firms … and we don’t have cubicles! We keep our overheads lean, we are not a stack-em-high-sell-em-cheap type of firm, and we don’t do body-shop work. We are just a high-end staff-based management consulting firm … at reasonable rates.

We are based in Ottawa – and these days, most of our work is in Ottawa. Though we are making good headway into other industries and other geographies, our bread and butter remains helping the Federal Public Sector do things better.

We have an opening during the 2023 Fall term for students currently enrolled in a University Co-operative Education program and interested in a future career as a Management Consultant. The ideal candidate will be pursuing a degree in business, accounting, finance, entrepreneurship or general commerce and will be looking to develop skills in a wide variety of environments, as well as provide innovative and valuable feedback to the Nīewe team. The candidate will be working directly with Nīewe management as well as interacting directly with clients and other stakeholders.Strong interpersonal skills and initiative are required to thrive in the Nīewe environment.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Support consulting team on client projects
  • Support the development of proposals to win new business
  • Provide administrative and other corporate services support as required
  • Undertake and manage an innovation project to help grow the business

Required skills

  • Not surprisingly, you need to want to have a have management consulting career in one or more of our service areas (Financial Management, Governance, Risk & Oversight, Strategy & Operations and Business Transformation).
  • Fluency in English is a requirement. Speaking French as well as English is even better! If you speak multiple languages, maybe we’ll have you teaching lunchtime classes.
  • You really need to want to join a start-up. If you are looking for a firm with significant formal processes and a 20-year march to Partner, then this isn’t the place for you.
  • You should want to get involved in areas of the organization other than just consulting for clients. We are a start-up (did we mention that?) so we all chip in to help grow the business. You should look forward to supporting corporate areas like sales, marketing, HR, IT, accounting, communications etc … you name it … if a firm needs to do it, so do we (and there is an opportunity to get involved).
  • We are outcome based - not input based – you need to be all about achieving results, not about how many hours your work. The people who do well, do well.
  • We have a "no jerks or a**holes policy". It doesn’t matter how good you are, if you can’t play well with others, this isn’t the place for you.
  • We don’t micro-manage at Nīewe (we treat our staff as professionals) so you need to be a self-starter and the kind of person who is driven to be effective.
  • If you don’t want the hierarchy and bureaucracy of a large consulting firm, this could be the place for you. Though we have some key processes so that people know what they’re supposed to be doing, we work hard to keep things streamlined and the organization is as flat as we can manage.

Location of work

The candidate will be expected to regularly work on their own in Ottawa, in a hoteling environment (e.g. from home, client-site, the university or a co-working space), but will have direct access to management during the workday. At a minimum, there will be weekly checkpoint meetings with the candidate’s supervisor.

Client sites and co-working spaces are available by public transit.Should there be a requirement to move sites during the day for work purposes, transportation requirements will be addressed on a case-by-case basis.

A laptop will be provided, but the candidate will require his or her own smartphone.

We thank all applicants for their interest in any of our positions; however, only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.

We are an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. We strongly encourage applications from Indigenous people, racialized people, people with disabilities, people from gender and sexually diverse communities and/or people with intersectional identities.

We respect the dignity and independence of people with disabilities and provide accommodation and support to persons with disabilities throughout any recruitment process, once made aware of a need for accommodation. If you require any special accommodation or support during the recruitment process, please indicate in your email to us.
