Job Overview
The Weekend & Substitute Cook is responsible for meal preparation and food service operations within a Catholic rectory that also serves as a seminary. This part-time position involves working fixed hours on weekends, statutory holidays, vacation periods, and other days when the Main Cook is away. This role involves preparing lunch and dinner daily for as many as 40 residents, including seminarians, priests, and staff members. The Cook will ensure that all meals are prepared in accordance with established guidelines, taking into consideration any dietary restrictions. This position requires good culinary skills, organizational abilities, and scheduling flexibility.
Hours & Wages
- $20-25 per hour.
- 8 hours/day
Duties & Responsibilities
- Together with the Prefect of the Refectory, monitors food quality and presentation, addressing any issues promptly and ensuring consistent excellence.
- Prepares breakfast food for the following morning as needed.
- Maintains a clean and organized kitchen, adhering to all health and safety regulations.
- Ensures proper storage, handling, and labeling of food items to prevent spoilage and cross- contamination.
- Provides food service for occasional special events in the seminary and parish.
- Maintains a positive and professional demeanor in the kitchen, respecting the religious character of the establishment and ensuring silence is kept during dinner service.
- Accommodates special dietary needs or restrictions, including allergies, food sensitivities, & medical conditions.
- Ensures the timely and accurate preparation of meals according to a strict schedule coordinated with the liturgical, educational, and professional life of the residents.
- Collaborates with kitchen assistants and support staff in preparing meals, serving food, and retrieving dishes for cleaning.
- Assists with food inventory management, ensuring adequate supplies are available.
- Assists the Prefect of the Refectory in planning a nutritional and balanced menu, considering dietary needs, seasonal ingredients, and traditional Catholic customs and practices.
Requirements

- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- A Criminal Record Check is required.
- Successful work experience in meal preparation.
- Knowledge of food safety and sanitation regulations & best practices.
- Ability to honour and maintain confidentiality.
