Communications Coordinator
Full Time – 37.5 Hours
The British Columbia Schizophrenia Society (BCSS) has a vision where those affected by schizophrenia and other serious mental illness receive effective treatment and support, and family members are an essential partner within the mental health system. Our mission is to support families affected by schizophrenia and other serious mental illness in British Columbia through education advocacy and research. BCSS was founded in 1982 and is a charitable society with a provincial office located in Vancouver, BC.
The BCSS Communications Coordinator position includes a comprehensive benefit package that includes healthcare, dental, RRSP matching, and a generous allotment of paid sick days and vacation time. This is a primarily remote position, requiring visits to the provincial office in Vancouver for special events, meetings, and site visits.
The Communications Coordinator is an integral part of theCommunications and Marketingteam. The Communications Coordinator creates content for all aspects of BCSS, including both internal and external communications pieces such as newsletters, press releases, blog posts, podcast scripts, and content for marketing materials. They will work closely with the Communications and Marketing Manager and the Marketing Coordinator to support the growth and evolution of BCSS Communications and Marketing portfolio, as well as the development of BCSS, BCSS Youth, and the BCSS Foundation. The Communications and Marketingteamengages withBCSS stakeholders (i.e., families, volunteers, board members, staff,healthauthorities, government officials, etc.) toensureBCSS messaging reaches new audiences.
Position reports to the Communications and Marketing Manager
·Coordinate and develop a digital communication plan with the BCSS Communications team to support BCSS in meeting its strategic and communication goals
·Build and maintain strong relationships with the provincial team and community partners.
·Identify areas of growth especially the website and social media (e.g., engaging new people or education)
·Support the creation and promotion of the BCSS podcast “Look Again: Mental Illness Re-Examined."
·Work with the Communications and Marketing Manager to craft the messaging to promote the programs using rack cards, flyers, the BCSS and BCSS Youth website, email newsletter, and other channels
·Assist with the creation of content for BC Partners initiatives
·Support the BCSS staff with the creation of communications materials surrounding events, fundraising, services, advocacy, and other related BCSS programs
·Alongside the Marketing Coordinator, the Communications Coordinator will create content for BCSS communications pieces, including blog posts, email newsletters, print campaigns, press releases, annual reports, and social media
·Translate research on mental illness and related topics into plain language for youth and their families
·Source graphics for multiple audiences
·Develop and update website directory listings, as needed
·Review all communications collateral for BCSS/BCSS Youth and BCSS/BCSS Youth programs
·Support internal communication efforts, including staff newsletters and updates.
·Maintain and expand the organization's media contacts database
·Collaborate with the marketing team to integrate communication strategies into overall marketing campaigns
·Assist in crisis communication and reputation management, as needed.
·Create and edit engaging content for press releases, articles, newsletters, and other communication materials
·Manage the organization's website, ensuring that content is up-to-date, relevant, and easy to comprehend
·Support the BCSS Events Coordinator in the creation of the messaging, materials, and promotional plan for provincial events
·Monitor media coverage and track relevant news related to schizophrenia and other severe and persistent mental illnesses, providing regular updates to the team
OTHER·Follow all BCSS policies and procedures to ensure safety and risk management
·Other applicable duties as requested by the executive team
·Expected to attend the AGM and any other societal or staff meetings as required
- Experience and education in writing to diverse audiences and making complex topics understandable to a larger group would be an asset
- Comfortable using project management software for tracking tasks, social media strategy, and CRM systems
- 2-5 years of communications, journalism, or marketing, including content creation, copywriting, blogging, or other related experience
- Post-secondary education in a related field (marketing, communications, digital marketing, public relations, journalism, etc.)
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams, Canva, and Zoom
- Experience with increasing an organization’s online presence and engagement (i.e., using email campaigns, social media, digital advertising, and website content)
- Experience with the use of social media and project management tools
·Excellent writing and editing skills with a strong attention to detail
·Ability to take initiative and be creative
·Excellent administrative and organizational skills
·Demonstrated critical thinking/problem solving skills
·Ability to work effectively under tight deadlines and manage multiple projects
·Ability to work independently and collaboratively
·Strong written and verbalcommunication skills
·Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
·Knowledge of the BC mental health system and an understanding of schizophrenia is an asset
