Responsibilities For Inpatient Care
The Clinical Assistant Cardiology is a licensed physician employed by the Nova Scotia Health Authority to provide medical care under the supervision of a fully licensed physician. This position is assigned to the Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiology. Participation in the call schedule is required. Clinical Assistants report directly to the Cardiology Clinical Assistant Program Director or his or her designate and indirectly to the Central Zone Executive Medical Director through the Director of Medical Affairs, NSHA.
Clinical Responsibilities

• These responsibilities are meant to be indicative of the job responsibilities and duties and are not inclusive.
• Arranges consultations with other departments for care and investigation.
• Follows through on investigations and arranges follow-up outpatient visits.
• Under the supervision of an attending member of the Division of Cardiology:
• Functions as a member of the team in the Cardiology service at the level of a PGY1 or PGY2. Makes regular rounds with supervising staff.
• Performs procedures within the scope of his/her demonstrated competence and privileges and according to established policies or protocols. These may include: the insertion of peripheral intravenous lines, initiation of intravenous medication, taking blood samples for diagnostic purposes or arterial blood gases, insertion of Foley catheters, performing EKG’s and the removal of arterial sheaths.
• Radial artery lines will only be inserted at the request of senior resident or attending staff. This procedure will be supervised until full competency of the procedure is demonstrated.
• Liaises with nurses, housestaff, attending staff and other members of the health care team in the development of the overall patient care program.
• Communicates with patients, families, referring and family physicians concerning patient management plans.
• Attends educational sessions and rounds as time permits.
• Interacts with and orientates clinical clerks and PGY1’s, new to the Cardiology Service.
• Performs and documents admission history and physical examinations, progress notes, discharge summaries, death certificates, etc.
• Participates in on-call responsibilities of the service.
• Manages the day-to-day care of patients, including writing medical orders on charts and responding to emergencies, in consultation with attending staff.

About You

• CMPA coverage required
• Must have obtained (in writing) Review of Qualifications from The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia prior to application deadline. Please upload this with your application
• Competencies in other languages an asset; French preferred
• Completion of the equivalence of a rotating internship and postgraduate training and experience in Neurosurgery are consider assets
• Physical demand - Must be able to sit, stand, walk and perform duties as outlined above
• Mental and Visual demand – High; must be able to deal with stressful situations
• Good command of written and spoken English
• Must be able to promote and maintain good interpersonal skills
• ACLS certification required
• Must meet the requirements to obtain a Clinical Assistant License from The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia ( https://cpsns.ns.ca/resource/clinical-assistant-licence/ )

• Permanent, Full-time position, 96 hours bi-weekly

Compensation and Incentives

• $48.45 - $61.72 Hourly
