About The Opportunity
Reporting to the Manager, Coding & Abstracting, and working as a part of the Health Information Services team, the Assistant Manager provides day to day leadership and coordination for workforce operations within their area of responsibility. The Assistant Manager works with the Manager to support HIS strategies and operational plans to ensure consistency with legislation, accountability frameworks and the mission, vision and values of the organization. He/she contributes to the design and development of comprehensive health information services policies and organizational performance strategies to support the effective, efficient and sustainable delivery of services and programs.
The HIS Coding & Abstracting Portfolio Will Include
Coding & Abstracting - Service planning, support and oversight of all NSH acute DAD inpatient, NACRS day surgery and emergency, Cardiovascular Health, Reproductive care, Restorative care, and Mental Health and Addictions coding, as well as program support to Cancer Care Nova Scotia, Trauma Registry, Finance (billing), Reproductive Care and Cardiovascular Health.
This is position works as a hybrid model; Most days will consist of working from home. The amount of days spent on site will be dependent on operational needs

About You
We would love to hear from you if you have the following:
- Minimum of 2 years recent experience with health information management in an organization of significant size and/or complexity is required (consideration may be given to those with equivalent training and work experience)
- Minimum of 2 years recent acute coding with experience in inpatients (Adult Medical, Surgical, Rehab, Obstetrics, Pediatrics, Mental Health & Addictions)
- Current certification with the Canadian College of Health Information Management as well as registration and membership with the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA) required.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem solving skills with the ability to multi-task to meet tight deadlines
- High level of competence in both written and verbal communication
- Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, or Diploma in Health Information with 3 years of health information management experience
- Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred
- Data Quality and report writing expertise including Record Management Software report writing expertise (DAD & NACRS)
- Demonstrated experience in and knowledge of policy and procedure development and implementation, and project management
- Minimum 6 months or more experience in healthcare data analytics at provincial/regional level including the Coding Reporting system, CIHI Portal, and Your Insight, Admission Discharge Transfer System (McKesson (STAR)/ Meditech) and other analytic tools (Business Objects/COGNOS cubes, etc.) an asset
- Data quality coordination experience, experience investigating suspect data entry errors or omissions an asset
- Knowledge of Privacy Legislation – Freedom of Information & Protection of Privacy Act, Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, Personal Health Information Act (FOIPOP, PIPEDA, & PHIA)
- Strong leadership skills combined with excellent communication (oral, written) and interpersonal skills
- CHA Modern Management (Departmental Management) certificate or equivalent experience considered an asset
- Knowledge of, and ability to meet, Government & Canadian Institute of Health Information (CIHI) information requirements
