Job Summary


The Asset Officer is responsible for Intermodal (IM) traffic moving across CN’s network, including addressing network challenges to ensure that customer commitments are met.The role requires frequent interaction and communication with various cross-functional departments within CN. The incumbent manages and coordinates the Intermodal fleet of 25,000 platforms. The role is a central point of contact for Intermodal Operations, Ports, and Customer Service departments.


Main Responsibilities Execution Management


  • Communicate expectations and collaborate with Network Operations Centres and Regional Transportation Departments to optimize trains across the network
  • Monitor train capacities to ensure maximum train length, annulments and combination of trains to reduce crew starts
  • Identify IM terminals and Transportation Yards on capacity, connection issues and plans for loading or switching to expedite traffic
  • Report daily to CN stakeholders outside of IM network (major yards, Rail Traffic Control Centres) for traffic and extra schedules
  • Oversee Intermodal train schedules
  • Ensure execution of the daily Intermodal daily plan, online traffic and connections


Exception Management


  • Communicate all exceptions and recovery plans to Terminals or online to Customer Service Groups
  • Collaborate with customs group on all holds and transportation on release for lift plans when traffic held at border
  • Interact with Mechanical Departments across the network regarding erroneous car orders and plan recovery accordingly
  • Identify capacity restraints within the network
  • Manage and identify on-line exceptions and follow up with recovery plans
  • Collaborate with Rail Traffic Control centres on unplanned set-offs, lifts and reductions
  • Monitor IM trains (Mis-marshaled, Misroutes and Overloads)
  • Collaborate with Dispatch team on all trucking requirements


Asset and Management


  • Interact with other Class 1 railroads
  • Produce daily reports
  • Manage fleet of intermodal cars, including foreign, spines and wing cars
  • Collaborate with CN Terminals and Port Managers on car supplies and train performance impacts
  • Manage timely movement of CN Clips and Gensets to meet customer demand on perishable products
  • Collaborate with various outside vendors


Stakeholder Engagement


  • Bridge gaps and maximize synergy between Transportation and IM Network groups
  • Manage and maintain relationships, communication and collaborations with internal customers including IM Terminals, Transportation, Intermodal Planning and Customer service groups


Working Conditions


The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The role requires being available on-call 24/7 to respond to critical incidences. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure and manage stress.


Requirements Experience


Network Operations


  • Minimum 2 years of experience in the transportation industry
  • Experience in logistics management*
  • Any experience for these above would be considered as an asset
  • Experience with CN’s Intermodal network*


Education/Certification/Designation


  • College Diploma in Transportation, Logistics or Business
  • Any designation for these above would be considered as an asset
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Transportation, Logistics or Business*

Technical Skills/Knowledge


  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
  • Knowledge of Transportation, Intermodal Operations, Logistics and Supply Chain systems
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Suite Access and Business Objects
  • Knowledge of CN Systems including Service Reliability System (SRS), Right Time Business Intelligence (RTBI), Oasis and Pegasus*
  • Working knowledge of terminal and yard operations*
  • Knowledge of industry and railroad specifics
  • Any knowledge for any of the above would be considered as an asset
