As an Anesthesia Assistant with VCH you will


  • Ensure effective and safe patient care.
  • Maintain and advance your own clinical competence.
  • Demonstrate continuous improvement and best practice approach in anesthesiology assistant practice.
  • Participate on designated hospital committees/teams and approved research projects as assigned.
  • Provide technical support and clinical assistance with induction, maintenance and recovery phases of anesthesia by working both under the direct clinical supervision of the Anesthesiologist and as a member of an integrated surgical team.
  • Operate, prepare and maintain anaesthesiology equipment.
  • Assist the Anesthesiologist in developing and implementing the anesthesia care plan and monitor physiological responses of patients to the induction of anesthesia during surgery.


Education & Experience


  • Eligible for membership with the Canadian Anesthesiologists' Society (CAS).
  • Graduation from a recognized Anesthesia Assistant Program plus current certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).


Knowledge & Abilities


  • Demonstrated ability to establish workload prioritizes in collaboration with others.
  • Demonstrated ability to adjust to new or unexpected events.
  • Demonstrated skill in CPR techniques.
  • Demonstrated computer skills including the ability to effectively use a computerized patient care information system.
  • Demonstrated skill in techniques appropriate to the clinical area.
  • Broad knowledge of the CAS clinical practice guidelines for Anesthesia Assistants.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of current anesthesia assistant theory and practice within a client/family centered model for care.
  • Broad knowledge of research process and methodology.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess client responses to care, and to respond appropriately.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and implement plans of care in relation to client/family priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to use departmental and hospital policy and procedure manuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with and deal effectively with clients and their families, co-workers, physicians, other health care staff and staff of outside agencies.
  • Demonstrated skill in the use of medical equipment and supplies appropriate to the clinical area.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in collaboration with others as a member of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated physical ability to carry out the duties of the job.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with conflict situations.


The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes. Successful applicants may be required to complete a Criminal Records Review Check.


As per the current Public Health Orders (Long Term Care/Seniors Assisted Living Provincial Health Officer Order and the Health Sector Order), as of October 26, 2021, all employees working for Vancouver Coastal Health must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19. Proof of vaccination status will be required.

Vancouver Coastal Health is looking for a Certified Hand Therapist to join the Hand Therapy Clinic team at Richmond Hospital. Apply today to join our team!


As a Physiotherapist focused in Hand Therapy with VCH you will
  • Conducting advanced assessments utilizing an evidence-based approach,
  • Perform work such as
  • Implementing services utilizing advanced intervention approaches/procedures,
  • Planning goal directed services,
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of the service,
  • And contributing to the development, review and promotion of physiotherapy services.
  • Participating in physiotherapy and interdisciplinary research,
  • Utilize advanced clinical knowledge and procedures such as specialized wound care and debridement of soft tissue, to provide physiotherapy services to clients with an upper extremity injury.


Education & Experience
  • Certified Hand Therapist (CHT).
  • Degree in Physiotherapy or Rehabilitation Sciences and three (3) year’s experience in an acute setting including one (1) year in orthopaedics/hands.
  • Current full registration with the College of Physical Therapists of BC (CPTBC).
  • Successful completion of the American Hand Therapy Certification Examination.
  • Eligible for membership in the Physiotherapy Association of British Columbia (PABC).
  • Candidates with current interim registration or eligible for interim registration may also be considered.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities


  • Demonstrated ability to establish workload priorities in collaboration with others in a complex health care environment.
  • Skilled in the use of equipment, and in the techniques appropriate for treatment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in collaboration with others.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and clients both one-on-one and in groups.
  • Broad knowledge of bio-mechanical and assistive technology concepts, current trends and practice.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Broad knowledge of research process and methodology.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide effective consultation and education.
  • Demonstrated ability to function as a team member.
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize when referral to another health care professional is required.
  • Basic Computer literacy.
  • Broad knowledge of evidence-based clinical practice related to upper extremity therapy.
  • Broad knowledge of other health care disciplines and their role in client care.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach and empower clients to assume control over their health.
  • Broad knowledge of physiotherapy theory and practice within a client and family centred model of care.
