Job Description
Scope of Position:


As a member of an energetic Recreation team, you will provide recreational leadership to participants at Norfolk County recreation programs and special events with responsibilities including program delivery, administration and supervising participants. Through direct program, facilitation enables children, youth, adults and families to develop skills, make friends, socialize and build self-esteem. Accountable for the wellbeing of participants under the guidance of the Recreation Coordinator, Fitness and Active Living, Recreation Coordinator, Child, Youth & Special Events and /or Recreation Coordinator, Active Adults and Inclusion, ensuring activities are safe, inclusive and high quality following the High Five model.


Position Description:


  • Follows Norfolk County policies and procedures in program activities
  • Serves as a liaison with parents of participants (where applicable), reinforcing Norfolk County’s customer service, diversity and inclusion (special needs, ethno-cultural, English as a second language, socio-economic)
  • Follows lessons plans provided by the various Recreation Coordinators or Supervisor, Community Programs.
  • Participates in the delivery of a range of recreation and active living program activities delivered through Norfolk County Parks and Recreation such as After school programming, sports, games, crafts, skill based after school programming, PA Day Camps, March Break Day Camp and special events. Helps to ensure programming is adapted to participants
  • Demonstrates the confidence and ability to make decisions independently of peers and in the best interests of the participants. Resolves problems and conflicts effectively as they arise
  • Participates in orientation and training sessions
  • Assists in keeping attendance records by promptly reporting absences to the Appropriate Recreation Coordinator or Supervisor, Community Programs.
  • Closely monitors participant conduct and applies applicable policies.
  • Maintains positive, constructive relationships with fellow staff and the public.
  • Prioritizes participant well-being, safety and protection throughout programs and special events. Evaluates situations of potential risks to the safety, protection and well-being of participants and staff, proactively taking mitigating actions to address such risks
  • Assists with the service and clean-up of snacks when applicable. Prepares and organizes program equipment and supplies, reporting any inventory damage or shortages.
  • Other duties as required


Requirements


Knowledge and Experience:


  • HIGH FIVE – Principles of Healthy Child Development; Principles in Action; Healthy Mind, Health Child (if hired, must be obtained by January)
  • Experience in a leadership capacity is required i.e. student council member, leadership role on youth council
  • Experience working with children; knowledge of child development, crafts, sports, music and/or games
  • Employment is conditional upon: attendance at all training sessions, submission of required documentation/certification, adherence to the minimum age requirements and ability to meet the employment term
  • Standard First Aid with CPR Level C (if hired, must be obtained by start date)
  • Must be currently enrolled in at education institution on a full time basis
  • Minimum of 15 years of age


Skills and Abilities:


  • Must be motivated, hardworking individual able to work outside in all weather (hot, dusty, cold and wet)
  • Ability to prepare program plans and activities on a daily basis
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and problem solving skills
  • Excellent customer service and time management skills
  • Knowledge of the recreation programs offered by Norfolk County
  • Ability to work in a team environment or with minimal supervision, accept and follow verbal and written instructions, complete duties to an acceptable level of quantity and quality.
  • Ability to deal with the public courteously and effectively
  • Must be aware of safe work practices as they relate to job responsibilities and work environment, and have the basic understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
