Job Description
This position is a part of the Non-Academic Staff Association (NASA).

Location - North campus. This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in person

Position Summary


The Acoustic Technologist is responsible for supporting the operational delivery of products and services related to acoustic sensors. The Acoustic Technologist will be responsible for supporting acoustic monitoring, data processing, and research services while understanding the larger context around how the technology is being used to drive environmental sensor networks across Canada


Duties


Client Services


  • Developing and maintaining positive relationships with clients to foster ongoing business relationships
  • Communicating with clients to provide updates on project progress and results
  • Responding to client inquiries and providing technical support related to acoustic processing services


Data Management


  • Construction of datasets to support acoustic and wildlife research and development
  • Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of data processing and data management
  • Helping to develop and implement quality control measures to ensure the accuracy and reliability of data
  • Collecting, organizing, and analyzing acoustic data using specialized software and equipment


Operational Tasks


  • Troubleshooting technical issues with equipment and software, and conducting routine maintenance and calibration of equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability
  • Conducting research and staying up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies in the field of acoustics
  • Processing acoustic data by transforming raw sensor data into species detections
  • Performing acoustic testing on a variety of different protocols
  • Managing sub-contractors as necessary


Minimum Qualifications


  • Greater than 3 years working experience in the field of ecology, natural resource management, or acoustics with excellent organizational, writing and interpersonal skills.
  • B.Sc. degree in biological sciences, or related discipline


Preferred Qualifications


Preference given to those with:


  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Information management systems experience
  • Experience identifying vocalizing wildlife by sound;
  • Career interest in promoting sustainable resource management, convergence of technology and natural resource management;
  • Experience coding (R, Python)
  • An interest in learning;
  • Relevant education and experience (ecological data knowledge and experience);
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills;
  • Experience conducting wildlife surveys with digital recording technologies;
  • A proactive approach to managing problems;
  • Ability to adapt and evolve as required;
  • Self motivated;
  • Project management experience
  • Ecology or natural resource education
  • Engagement experience
  • Data management experience
  • Experience with environmental data analysis;


An Asset


  • Knowledge of Species at Risk
  • M.Sc. with self-guided research experience
  • Ability to communicate in French and English
  • Experience with machine learning and/or acoustic classification
