Position Summary
The Communications and SCADA Technician is responsible to provide field support for test, repair, operation, and/or maintenance of communications and signaling equipment.
This team will be responsible for the maintenance of passenger stations, the Maintenance and Storage Facility, and Traction Power substation buildings. This role must have the ability to embrace a dynamic working environment that promotes safety, service, quality, motivation and teamwork in a start-up environment.
Roles And Responsibilities
  • Ensure that the signaling system is properly maintained for maximum safe power availability uptime for revenue service, this includes all sub-systems and components including mechanical, electrical, safety interlocks and auxiliary equipment;
  • Repair, operation and maintenance of Communications and Signalling equipment;
  • Ensures work completed meets response time and quality requirements of the Project Agreement;
  • Troubleshooting of equipment and operation of portable test equipment, testing devices and special tools towards execution of support activities;
  • Confirm operability of enclosure including seals, door mechanisms and locks;
  • Record status of maintenance and repair work within a Computerized Maintenance Management System;
  • Other miscellaneous duties as may be assigned.
  • Update system software and perform routine tests. Assist other working groups to ensure system operation (Share information freely with colleagues to contribute to the reliability of the electrical infrastructure.
  • To undertake other duties related to the environment of the power assets or of Work as specified by the System Operations Manager in a safe manner;
  • Comply with all internal and external requirements including but not limited to environmental, health and safety, risk management, and fire protection requirements;
  • Report potential issues to management and engineering.
  • Operate equipment required for maintenance of the system. This may include (but is not limited to) aerial work platforms, rail mounted inspection equipment and others. Assist in completing assigned work as laid out in the schedule, understanding that emergencies may arise that necessitate a change in the schedule.
  • Provide technical expertise to subcontractors, project team members and less experienced personnel;
  • Report any and all inconsistencies from drawings, prints or mechanical schematics on Signalling systems. Keep track of calibrated tools. See upcoming issues related to warranty and MOD program and communicate them to ensure efficient work time.
Health, Safety, Environmental and Security
  • Inform/alert the control centre to any hazards which have been spotted along the route.
  • Maintaining an awareness and following emergency, accident/incident plan, policy and procedures.
  • Continuously monitor area of responsibility to ensure compliance with legislation and safety procedures. Overall responsibility of passengers, staff and goods to enable compliance with regulations through safe and effective rail operation.
  • Constantly maintain a secure environment and respond to security issues and take appropriate action in the event of a breach of a security as accordance with company safe operation procedures, policies and safe systems of work.
  • Understand the risk of ill health and the impact of wellbeing on the safety of an individual, others at work and the public. Understand strategies for fatigue management e.g., sleep quality, and stress management.
  • Constructively challenge unsafe practice at all levels and report through the necessary channels.
  • A good understanding, maintaining awareness and following relevant health, safety and environmental legislation, Operation rule book, standard operation procedures, health, safety and environmental requirements and instructions within own role and organization
  • Requirements and process for ensuring rail safety and security on the line, at stations and depots.
  • Manage own fitness to enable work to be carried out competently in order to reduce the risk to health and safety to self and all stakeholders.
Qualifications
  • Experience or certifications such as Fork Lift, Fall Arrest, working at heights, etc.
  • Excellent communication skills and inter personnel skills.
  • Five years of experience in a facility maintenance role in an industrial environment;
  • Demonstrated logical and analytical reasoning ability, and capable of making complex decisions.
  • Ability to multi-task and analyse situations promptly and without bias so as to determine the proper course of action or alternatives with due regard to safety and efficiency
  • Experience working in a LEED certified facility;
  • Good judgement & effective in solving practical problems, responds quick, calmly and appropriately to emergency situations;
  • Acquired competency required in mechanical and electronic systems;
  • An aptitude and comfort in using diagnostic computer systems and software;
  • Equipment and system troubleshooting and resolution skills;
  • Familiarity with a Centralized Maintenance Management System;
  • Working knowledge of Quality and Health & Safety standards and demonstrate a strong health, safety, quality, and environmental mindset; High level of safety awareness
  • Voltage certification is highly recommended.
  • Minimum of Grade 12, College degree
  • Ability to work independently, under pressure and adapt to constant change;
  • Demonstrate an ability to work efficiently in an unsupervised environment;
  • Team spirit. Supports team members.
  • Previous experience within rail transit or rail transportation industry considered an asset;
  • Certificate or license in related field. Capable of using computers and computer control systems, Capable of reading and understanding mechanical/electrical drawings, maintenance manuals and electrical schematics.
  • Highly motivated and flexible to work in a time-sensitive environment.
  • Experience in providing high quality service to customers & good interpersonal relationships
  • 2 to 4 years in a Traffic or LRT signalling environment, Railway or related industry
Job Conditions
  • Capable of working at heights and in confined spaces
  • Provides on-call/standby duties and emergency call-outs as required
  • Personal protective equipment is required to be worn as part of this role
  • Willing to work in an outside environment as required including during times of inclement weather
  • Valid drivers’ license required to perform work at multiple sites.
  • Willing to work shifts in a 24/7 environment
