Accountant/Senior Bookkeeper - Asl Environmental Sciences (Viatec)

ASL is seeking a full-time Accountant/Senior Bookkeeper to join our Administration team!

ASL Environmental Sciences Inc., is a world-class company with more than 40 years' experience in oceanographic, acoustic, remote sensing, and ice research services. We provide clients with scientific consulting services in flow measurement, numerical modeling, wave measurement and analysis, airborne and spaceborne optical and SAR remote sensing, sediment transport, acoustics, and ice studies. Based out of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, ASL provides products and services to national and international clients from industry, government, and academic sectors. ASL owns an extensive pool of metocean equipment, and we also manufacture a line of underwater acoustic measurement instruments, such as the AZFP Acoustic Zooplankton & Fish Profiler.

ASL is seeking a full-time Accountant/Senior Bookkeeper to join our Administration team. Our company is employee-owned and operated. We are looking for someone with significant accounting experience to assist in maintaining our books of account and to support the accounting aspect of the organization's operations. Responsibilities will be varied and interesting. The selected individual will work closely with Senior staff and Division Managers. The accountant will have some supervisory responsibility.

Much of the experience will be gained on the job, experience in a high-tech and project-oriented environment would be an asset . We envision a continuing appointment and gradually increasing levels of responsibility for the right candidate.

Roles/responsibilities

• Maintain an accurate and complete trail of supporting documentation for all bookkeeping activities.
• Liaise with project managers and support them in project accounting and invoicing.
• Maintain work in progress (WIP) for consulting projects.
• Perform standard bookkeeping functions (for example, preparing and posting invoices, accounts receivable, supervise the preparation of cheques and deposits, etc.).
• Preparation of year-end working papers and spreadsheets.
• Maintain an up to date, complete, and systematic filing system to support financial records.
• Complete monthly reconciliation for all bank accounts.

Requirements

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Fast learner.
• Experience with Simply Accounting (SAGE) software is an asset.
• Ability to effectively organize and prepare back up documentation to support any financial information reported externally.
• Initially, the position will be based at our offices in Saanichton.
• Competence with standard office software such as Excel, Word, and Outlook.
• The position offers the possibility to work remotely from home for a portion of the week.
• 7 years of accounting experience. Training in a recognized accounting program is highly desirable and would be counted as part of the experience.
• Experience in preparing SR&ED claims is an asset.
• Ability to work well with others.
• Very organized and systematic nature with strong time management skills.

ASL is a federal government contractor. For this reason, the successful candidate is required to complete a background check to get reliability confirmation from Public Works Canada.

Start date: as soon as possible (negotiable)

Time Commitment: 37.5 hours per week, full time, permanent
