Reporting to the Deputy Chief of 911 operations, the 911 Assistant Chief will be a key member of the leadership team, responsible for determining and executing strategic priorities. In this position, you will work closely with key internal and external partners, contracted services, and multiple levels of government to maintain and advance the service of 911 and to develop new initiatives. You will help define systems and processes that are geared towards supporting staff and foster an environment of continuous improvement and operational effectiveness.
Primary duties include:
- Promote 911 Operations’ identity and increase public awareness.
- Provide strategic direction and oversight to direct reports. Ensure operational alignment with the benchmarks and regulations and best practices that guide 911 Operations.
- Contribute to the development of strategy and business planning for the 911 Operations service line.
- Ensure quality and service standards are met and that activities are consistent with the values, vision and strategic direction of The City of Calgary and Emergency Management & Community Safety.
- Foster a healthy collaborative work culture and sponsor and support mental and physical health initiatives for staff.
- Provide coaching, leadership and direction to direct and indirect reports to ensure development and engagement of staff and promote effective operations and culture within 911 Operations.
- Manage human resource functions including recruitment, coaching, training, career development and performance management.
- Develop and manage relationships with internal and external partners, including other levels of government. Strive to be a centre of excellence in public safety and 911 services.
- Provide key support to the Chief and Deputy Chief with strategic deliverables including workflow, project and program timelines and work plans. Manage administration and business planning requirement for the work area.
Qualifications
- A background in emergency service and/or experience in a 911 call centre will be considered an asset.
- Experience in managing or leading through cultural change will also be an asset.
- A degree in Business Administration, Sociology, Public Administration, Social Sciences or related field and at least 4 years of related experience.
- Demonstrated political and business acumen.
- A completed certificate or diploma equivalent to 2-3 years of full-time study in Business Administration, Sociology, Public Administration, Social Sciences or related field and at least 8 years of related experience, OR;
- Success in this position requires the following competencies:
- The ability to lead and develop others and inspire, motivate and develop teams.
- The ability to deal with uncertain, changing incidents.
- Strategic and critical thinking.
