As an Terrestrial Ecologist, you will join our Guelph or Kitchener office as part of our Eastern Natural Sciences team. The successful applicant will work in an integrated team of aquatic and terrestrial ecologists, fluvial geomorphologists and field staff to deliver a variety of projects. The successful applicant will use their technical abilities to execute tree inventories, botanical and wildlife surveys, ecological land classification assessments with the potential to help with a variety of water-related field activities (e.g. fish inventory, stream channel surveys, water quality and benthic sampling). This individual works well under pressure, is flexible and positive, and highly meticulous with a willingness to learn. Responsibilities are as follows:

  • Mentor and guide junior staff
  • Work with senior technical staff to develop and execute natural heritage assessments, inventories and impact assessments, as well as prepare technical correspondence and project reports
  • Manage and coordinate projects
  • Conduct field work and carry out standard field methods (tree inventories, Ecological Land Classification, botanical inventories, wildlife surveys [birds, amphibians, bats, SAR], fish habitat mapping, water quality and benthic sampling, fish capture and relocations)
  • Assist other disciplines with projects and tasks as required
  • Provide advice to internal and external clients related to municipal, transportation and industrial environmental assessments, including regulatory / offsetting strategies, best management and mitigation practices, and environmental monitoring programs
  • Complete pre-field planning for projects (i.e., safety planning, mapping preparation, equipment calibration) following Matrix standards
  • Review background data including agency liaison to determine Species at Risk (SAR) and environmental constraints
  • Prepare and/or review technical reports, work plans and cost estimates


What We Are Looking For

  • 5 or more years of terrestrial ecology experience in a consulting or directly related environment
  • Arborist Certification (ISA) is considered an asset
  • Analytical skills applicable to data analysis, study design and statistical analysis of environmental data
  • Self-motivated and possess strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Technical Diploma or Bachelor of Science degree(s) in biology, ecology, environmental science or related discipline, with a focus in botany, zoology, ecology, environmental science or related discipline
  • Strong organizational skills with the demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, plan, schedule, and coordinate various activities relating to projects and proposal submissions
  • Ability to work on a variety of projects in various sectors (e.g., urban, infrastructure, oil and gas, hydropower, spill response)
  • Ecological Land Classification of Ontario certification (preferably southern Ontario) and Ontario Wetland Evaluation System (OWES) evaluator is preferred
  • Experience preparing cost estimates and proposals is considered an asset
  • Valid driver’s license is required
  • Wildlife survey experience including breeding bird, nest sweep, acoustic recording unit and camera deployment surveys, winter tracking, owl and amphibian surveys (including pitfall trapping)
