Based in Sudbury, the Aquatic Ecologist will report to the Environmental Department Lead and will have a wide range of duties which ultimately focus on environmental assessment, species at risk, and aquatic studies. You will be part of a team that provides practical ecological solutions to industry, government, and private sectors.


What You’ll Do:


The Aquatic Ecologist will be part of the Environmental team within the Engineering division. You will:


  • Design and perform effective aquatic habitat and aquatic biota surveys to meet applicable regulatory or project specific requirements
  • Conduct all aspects of business with the utmost respect, honesty, and integrity, including interactions with regulators, clients, and colleagues
  • Ensure efficient and effective use of time and resources to adhere to project budgets and schedules
  • Conduct fish and fish habitat assessments using a variety of gear and sampling techniques in a range of aquatic environments
  • Interpret field data to prepare quality, accurate, and technically sound reports and regulatory documents
  • Record clear and concise field data under varied conditions including inclement weather and throughout the evening
  • Support various environmental project work as required
  • Conduct assessments of project impacts on Natural Heritage features and prepare mitigation strategies to eliminate or reduce those impacts
  • Review technical documents, reports, and other deliverables prepared by colleagues to ensure quality control and to provide technical input

Who You Are:


  • You are trusted and provided freedom to work independently but also contribute to the overall team success
  • You are proficient with standard to advanced statistical analytical tools (Proficiency with R preferred)
  • You are not afraid to raise your hand when you need help or guidance
  • You are comfortable working in and around water, in remote areas, in all weather conditions, and at night
  • You are willing to travel for fieldwork
  • You can pivot and alter approach or recommendations to accomplish desired results
  • You have the demonstrated ability to perform studies in aquatic ecology (Study design and project management experience is an asset)
  • You make decisions and exercise independent judgment within defined parameters and in alignment with business objectives
  • You have 2-5 years experience working in a related role, preferably including consulting experience


What You Should Bring:


The ideal candidate will have a university degree (Master’s degree preferred) in Ecology, Biology, or a related program. Additionally, you should have:


  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Dedication to health and safety in the workplace
  • A valid, Class G driver’s licence
  • Ability to manage confidential data
  • Experience with a range of fish and aquatic sampling techniques
  • General knowledge of fish and fish habitat
  • Experience in field survey design and coordination
  • Strong interpersonal and critical thinking skills
  • Experience conducting fish community and population assessments
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written), including strong technical writing skills
  • High motivation with results-oriented focus
  • Knowledge of provincial and federal environmental legislation
  • Assets for this position include: experience supervising and directing junior technical staff; MTO/DFO/MNRF fisheries protocol training; RAQS certification for Fisheries Assessment or Fisheries Contracts Specialty; and/or a ROM fish identification course.
  • Superior organizational and multi-tasking skills
